Paper Landscapes
Paper Landscapes
Minimal, dream-like, traces of memories and living spaces in which we have grown up, Hiran Mitra poignantly captures the essential feeling in his paintings. In a vibrant combination of black, red and earthly hues, he opens for us, that in-between moment when we feel like dreaming and imagining something intimate outside the hectic reality. Time slows down for us.
Influenced by nature, folk music and dance forms, Hiran has contributed significantly to the visual stimulus in eastern Indian films, television, theatre and literature in the last two decades. He makes us aware that the human condition exalts in the twilight zones of reality and time, offering a precious introspective escape route. A dense black or the soft shadowy forms are the positive and definitive state from which one can start exploring. Using primarily brush strokes, layered washes and sprays, in a refreshing set of colours or hues of black and often masking the surface he lets the viewer nearly create his own image.
Art Border Line, UK is proud to be exhibiting "Paper Landscapes", his abstract paintings and drawings on paper that have rarely been shown to the public. The body of the show explores the mental landscapes we derive and preserve from our environment. While the artist’s canvases are more well known, these expressions on paper are more intimate and immediate as they narrate the vital steps taken in his forty years career.
On the same occasion Mr. Gerard Xurigeura, renowned Art historian and exemplary commissioner of global Symposiums, Biennales and Monumental sculpture parks, will be presenting "Shadows" a monographic book on selected periods of Hiran’s images and their language.
We are also happy to announce the artist has been selected to be part of the Florence Biennale in December 2007 and will be showing solo exhibits in Paris and Mumbai of his recent canvases.

For the Press:
Hiran Mitra broke away from the academic fine arts approach after his Art degree in Government Art College of Calcutta, to build a movement in abstraction and chromatic philosophy surrounding motion and light. Since 1966 he has had over 10 major solo shows in India and England. Important group exhibitions such as "Contemporary Forms" at Cima Gallery, "Color palette" at the India Habitat Centre, "Art & Bread, Kunst au Indien, Curated by Hannalore Christ in Hamburg, Artists of the Millennium, Calcutta Townhall Museum, etc have marked his global public. Resident artist of Lalit Kala Academy he prefers to travel while experimenting with new forms, techniques and concepts in drawing, painting and photography. Hiran’s live painting performances on Body art, Dance troupes and Film art directions have often lead him to challenge boundaries between seeing and being animated by Art. He lives in Kolkata and loves exploring the star-studded sky through ever bigger telescopes.
The Exhibition "Paper Landscapes" will be shown at the Gallery 27, on 27 Cork Street, London W1S 3NG from 19th to 24th March, 2007, 10am-7pm daily with the presence of the artist.
