Window 42 is pleased to present the latest photographic work of the french
artist Margot Montigny.
Montigny's practice centres on contrived narratives and junk fictions which
she creates through staged events. Her photographs often become images of
popular culture such as in her 'hollywood cocktail party' structured as a
'movie experience' with decor and hired actors to create an ultimate 'movie
experience'. Montigny likes to weave stories for the voyeur in all of us
using stylistic traits, from hollywood film genres to fashion stills.
Consider, 'Who killed Dr. Black', a staged series of detective photographs
in a 'Cluedo- esque style' with which she creates a glossy suspense, with no
answers. Montigy's work has a strong element of curiosity and play about
it, much like answering a question with a question. Take her latest
installation
work, 'Cocktail Bar' and 'Sex Shop entry', although three dimensional, they
are impenetrable images and facades determined to hold onto an uncanny air
of mystery. Montigy's work is much like an invitation to a fictional party,
where you don't know any of the guests and its only a board game.
