Crossing and Columns, a series of photos and a installation that negates the notion of the space. The exhibition shows two facets of her work, both bound up with intervention in a space and its architectural and social functions, where she looks for the spectator's active involvement, whether it be conscious or unconscious.
Galeria Distrito Cu4tro presents an exhibition by the artist Maider López of two projects, Crossing and Columns. The exhibition shows two facets of her work, both bound up with intervention in a space and its architectural and social functions, where she looks for the spectator's active involvement, whether it be conscious or unconscious.
Crossing is Maider López's new project brought about in Rotterdam during her residence in Duende Aktiviteiten. It consists of a series of photos taken at the very moment when a person passes a building or some other part of the urban landscape, wearing the same colour as what they are passing. The pictures show, some very obviously, others more subtly, people camouflaged into the architecture by the colour of their clothing. They show scenes which speak of the city and its various urban manifestations, in moments of casual encounter between the passer-by and the architecture.
The project Columns, previously shown at the Caixa Fórum (Barcelona) and in Koldo Mitxelena (Donostia – San Sebastian) consists in filling the gallery with columns in such a way that they negate the notion of the space. It deals with the idea that an exhibition space has lost its function because architectural elements are taking up the whole room. The spectator comes into a forest of columns and will have to pass through the labyrinth which they make up. So she thereby creates a fragmented image of the place, making it impossible to comprehend the space, at the same time creating a new space in which to experiment, suggesting new pathways, new ways of occupying it.
Maider López (Donostia-San Sebastián, 1975) has had individual exhibitions such as her recent Project Room Stand in Arco 2007; Columns, in Sala Montcada, Caixa Forum (2006); Beach, in Espacio Distrito Cu4tro; Cars, produced by Amasté and Arteleku, and Awnings, a project on the façade of La Casa Encendida, Madrid (2003). She has also taken part in numerous group exhibitions such as: Open Studio, Buenos Aires (2006); 51st Venice Biennale, Italian Pavilion (2005); Biennale Cuvee, OK Center for Contemporary Art, Linz, Austria (2005) and Indisciplinados, MARCO, Vigo (2003).
Maider has just been awarded the first ABC prize for Painting and Photography and she is enjoying the bursary given by the Collection Cam for the Plastic Arts. Previously, as well as other awards, she won the prize in Purificacion Garcia's Photographic Competition (2005), the ISCP. In New York she got the Injuve Award (2003) and the Botin Foundation gave her the Plastic Arts bursary (1999)
