The Emily and Gordon Bottomley Bequest

Tullie House Art Gallery presents a major exhibition of some of Carlisle's most important treasures. In 1949, the gift of over six hundred paintings prints and drawings from Emily and Gordon Bottomley transformed the Tullie House art collection into one of national standing. It included works by many major British artists, including the Pre-Raphaelites - who proved so influential on future developments in art, and enjoyed a lasting popularity. The exhibition includes over one hundred and fifty works from the Bottomley bequest, with some that have rarely been seen since the museum first acquired them.

Gordon Bottomley (1874-1948) lived at Silverdale, Lancashire with his wife Emily. He wrote modest plays and poetry and was friendly with many writers and artists including Paul Nash. Bottomley was also an art collector: many of his friends gave him examples of their work, and he purchased works by the Pre-Raphaelites among others. The Bottomley's displayed these pictures throughout their home at Silverdale.

Key works on show include: Harvest Moon, Shoreham c.1830 watercolour by Samuel Palmer, Borgia 1851-9 watercolour, Found c.1854 oil, Risen at Dawn; Gretchen Discovering Faust's Jewels 1868 chalk all by Dante Gabriel Rossetti, The Goldfish Pool 1861 gouache, Voyage to Vinland the Good 1884 chalk, Study for Laus Veneris; A Woman's Head c.1873 drawing, Helen, A Mermaid c.1880 oil all by Edward Coley Burne-Jones, Artemis 1861 drawing by William Morris, Windereme; A Storm 1848 by Ford Madox Brown, The Rift Within the Lute oil 1861, Madeleine c.1862-5 oil by Arthur Hughes. Other works include: Oedipus and the Sphinx 1891 drawing by Charles Ricketts and Wittenham Clumps 1913 watercolour, Under the Hill 1912 drawing, Barbara in the Garden 1913 watercolour all by Paul Nash.

"We are very fortunate to have such a rich art collection in Carlisle. The exhibition will appeal to art lovers, particularly those fond of the Pre-Raphaelites and their followers. " said Melanie Gardner, Keeper of Fine & Decorative Art.
