New Life and the Dream Garden

This vibrant group exhibition, New Life and the Dream Garden, brings together recent and newly commissioned works by 12 international emerging artists, six UK-based and six from abroad. Drawing inspiration from Thomas More’s 16th century book, the show is a satirical reflection of contemporary life cast in the form of the elusive search for the fantastical utopian dream. The view shifts from a focus on unattainable idealism to an exploration of the real world. In migrating and relocating to these new territories, the artists’ vainly constructed ‘dream gardens’ can only collapse looking towards ‘ou topos’ (no place), ultimately mirroring our society.

Gordon Cheung lives and works in London. Cheung graduated from Central Saint Martins, BA 1998 and received his MA from the Royal College of Art in 2001. He was selected to take part in the largest and most ambitious survey of recent developments in art from the UK: The British Art Show 6, BALTIC Museum, Gateshead (2006). His recent exhibitions include Gordon Cheung – Recent Paintings, Djanogly Gallery, UK (2007), Arrivals and Departures, URBIS Museum, UK (2007), John Moores Painting 24, Liverpool Bienalle (2006), ACG Publications, Alan Cristea Gallery, London (2005), His works have recently been acquired for the ASU Art Museum, Hirshhorn Museum, Whitworth Museum and he has been commissioned for a Laing Art Solo Award for July 2007.

Nick Goulis lives and works in Athens. Goulis received his BA from the School of Fine and Applied Arts in Thessaloniki, Greece (2001) and MFA in Fine Art at the Sandberg Institute, Amsterdam (2006). He has shown in Greece, The Netherlands, Italy and UK, including recent solo shows: Sorry H8ters at Athanassiadou Art Advice (AAA), Athens (2007); I hope I won’t die poor at Gallery De Praktijk, Amsterdam (2006) and Nick Goulis at Art Gallery of Ziekenhuis Rijnstate, Arnhem, The Netherlands (2006). He has taken part in several recent group exhibitions: Let me hear your body talk, Arti et Amiticia, Amsterdam (2005) and masquerade in Selini Gallery, Athens (2006).

Lakis and Aris Ionas live and work in Athens. The Ionas brothers studied at Chelsea College of Art and Design, London (MA Fine Art 2001-02). They have exhibited across the UK and Europe, including 11th Biennale of Young Artists of Europe and the Mediterranean, Athens (2003); Charlie’s place, Annely Juda Fine Art, London (2003); Euroscreen, PAN Kunst Forum, Emmerich, Germany (2003); The London Institute Gallery (nominated for the Red Mansion Spero Prize), London (2002); the Callas - Superman Died Yesterday, the Breeder Gallery, Athens (2006); Contemporary Traditions at Bios, Athens; Sequence, De Roode Bioscoop, Amsterdam (2005) and the Space, London (2006). They have recently curated Part-Time Punks at DESTE Foundation, Athens in March 2007. Since 2004 they formed the band The Callas. They released Superman Died Yesterday 2005, Trust Lust 2006 and DIY or DIE 2007 on their own label, Out of Tune!

Toine Klaassen lives and works in Rotterdam. Graduated from Rietveld Artacademy, Amsterdam (1995-2000), Klaassen’s daily research into ‘archeology of the nowadays’ has produced exhibitions such as Immortality Bar at Stadsalerij Museum for Contemporary Art Heerlen, web-based project: Six Films on BasementArtProject.com; the artist in residence Orbino with the project Fatamorgana organised in the shipping containers of Unit 1 at Alkmaar, The Netherlands (2006); an experimental laboratory in the group show, Sense and Sensitivity at Tent, Center for visual arts Rotterdam (2006) and Satellite Works, La Centrale, Montreal and Galerie L'Oeil de Poisson, Quebec City (2007). He is working towards a new project, Reservation, which will be part of TEMPORARY MUSEUM in Amsterdam (2007).

Mathijs Lieshout lives and works in Amsterdam and Utrecht. Lieshout studied Fine Arts at Hogeschool voor de Kunsten Utrecht (1995-2000) and philosophy at Universiteit van Amsterdam (2000-2003). He has participated and organized projects, residency and events across The Netherlands, such as in 2005: Project Basis, Artis Den Bosch; Toine's Immortality Bar, Stadsgalerij, Heerlen; Creation is Beautiful, Destruction is Awesome, Galerie minimaal twee weken, Schiedam; Subgoed, Kunsthuis Syb, Beetsterzwaag; Sequence, De Roode Bioscoop, Amsterdam and The Space, London. In 2006: Enter the Callcenter, Performancelab, Kunstvlaai6, Amsterdam; Nuzeum, Kunstlab Orbino, Alkmaar. He is currently working towards Ukuntnubellen! (callnow!), Galerie Sign, Groningen, The Netherlands.

Mauricio Lupini lives and works in Rome. Lupini studied architecture in Caracas, photography in Rome and in 2001 received his Masters in Fine Art at Goldsmiths College, London. His recent group exhibitions include: Sequence, De Roode Bioscoop, Amsterdam and The Space, London (2006); Tropical Abstraction, Stedelijk Museum Bureau, Amsterdam (2005); San Juan Triennial (Puerto Rico, 2004), Prague Biennale I (2001). In 2002 Lupini produced a video-installation TV show: Unidad de Habitacion for the exhibition Etnografía: modo de empleo, Museo de Bellas Artes, Caracas. Lupini’s solo exhibitions were held at Museo Otero, Caracas (1999), Sala Mendoza, Caracas, (2000 and 1995) and Museo Jesus Soto, Ciudad Bolivar (1995). The National Art Gallery of Venezuela (GAN) published his book ‘Things to Consider Before Shooting’ in 2001.

Sheena Macrae lives and works in London. Originally studying in Vancouver, Canada, Macrae graduated with a BFA in film and video from Emily Carr Institute. While making her own films she also has worked extensively in the film and television industry. She moved to London to study at Goldsmiths College and graduated with a Masters in Fine Art in 2002. She has exhibited internationally. Recently her work featured in Moscow International Film Festival, Avanto Media Art Festival in Helsinki and Imaginaria Internazionale Italy (Best Video Art Prize). In 2006, she was the international artist-in- residence at Gertrude Contemporary Art, Melbourne and recently completed a monograph exhibition at the MAC-VAL, Musée d'Art Contemporain Val-de- Marne in Paris with upcoming commissions and shows in Sydney, Brisbane, London and Paris.

Alicia Paz lives and works in London. Paz graduated from U.C. Berkeley, ENSB-A Paris, and Goldsmiths College, London. She has exhibited widely both in Europe and Latin America. Most recently, she has participated in John Moores Painting 24, Liverpool Bienalle (2006) and had solo exhibitions at Houldsworth Gallery in London (2006) and at Ruth Benzacar Gallery in Buenos Aires (2005). Group exhibitions include Continental Shift, the Ludwig Forum, Aachen, Germany (2000), and East International 2004, Norwich, England. Her work has been the subject of various catalogues and publications and has been reviewed internationally (Art News, Art Press, Modern Painters, Art Forum). In April 2007, Paz will present a solo show at Unit 2 Gallery, London Metropolitan University.

Jorge Rivera lives and works in London. Rivera completed an MA at the Royal College of Art where he is currently doing his PhD in sculpture. He has exhibited internationally, including Sotheby's in Chigago, Vienna and Tel-Aviv (2001); solo shows in Nagoya, Takumy Museum (2002), Madrid Galeria 57 (2003), Galeria Caracol, Valladolid (2003); international art fair ARCO'03, ARCO'05 and Project-rooms ARCO'04; Galeria SCQ in Santiago de Compostela, Spain (2004), Parlamento de Galicia, Spain (2005-2006). He was a finalist of the Madame Toussauds Prize 2002 and Purificacion Garcia Prize in 2004.

Andro Semeiko lives and works in London. Semeiko studied at Goldsmiths College (London, 2001), and the Royal Academy of Arts (London, 2006). He has exhibited in New Contemporaries 2001, Camden Arts Centre (London) and Sunderland Museum; Beautiful Tomorrows, Palix Gallery (Paris, 2002); tent., Podion Gallery (Amsterdam, 2002); Shine, The Lowry Gallery (Manchester, 2002); Charlie’s Place, Annely Juda Fine Art (London, 2003); Caution: Uneven Surfaces, temporarycontemporary (London, 2004); Bow Festival (London, 2005); Sequence, De Roode Bioscoop (Amsterdam 2005) and The Space (London 2006); Beauty Unrealized, PSWAR (Amsterdam 2007) and Ethereal, CWG Fine Art (London 2007). He received the Kunstanjer 2000, Prince Bernard Culture Prize (The Netherlands), British Institution Prize 2004 (London) and has been selected as a finalist for Celeste Art Prize 2007.

Yu-Chen Wang lives and works in London. Wang studied at Goldsmiths College (2000-01) and Chelsea College of Art and Design (MA Fine Art 2001-02). She has exhibited internationally, including tent., Podion Gallery, Amsterdam (2002), Tank.TV, ICA, London (2004), Caution, Uneven Surfaces, temporarycontemporary, London (2004), Synch Festival, Athens (2005) and Darklight Film Festival, Dublin (2006). She was short-listed for the Guardian/Observer Award (2002), the Pizza Express Prospects 2004 Drawing Prize, UK and The Vauxhall Auteur Theory (Curzon Soho 2005; ICA 2006). Her works have been shown on BBC Big Screen, Manchester (2006); Archipeinture: Moving in Architecture, Camden Arts Centre, London (2006) and Curzon Soho, London (2006); Satellite Works, La Centrale, Montreal and Galerie L'Oeil de Poisson, Quebec City (2007) and FRAC Nord-Pas de Calais, France (2007).
