Nelle immagini fotografiche di Romolo Belvedere tutto diventa “corpo”. Per questo artista, di chiara discendenza teatrale, la fisicità è tutto. Non tanto nel senso della vitalità quanto piuttosto nel corpo inteso come Eros e Tanatos.

Le sue inquadrature hanno “volume”, profondità, sono vive e lievitano, sono leggere come il soffio, sensuali e seduttive come l’alito, il colpo d’ala di un angelo tangibile, afferrabile e di lontana nostalgia. Belvedere sceglie i suoi soggetti prevalentemente nel mondo della finzione: set cinematografici preferibilmente spenti, teatri, palcoscenici, luoghi dove l’azione si è già compiuta. I gesti sono ormai ricordi. Eroi ed eroine sono uscite di scena. E’ rimasto solo il silenzio.

Eppure questi luoghi vivono. O, meglio, in questi luoghi si sente - e neanche tanto impercettibilmente – la trama eterna, il dramma della vita che si ripete inesorabile. Non più spazi abitati da corpi ma popolati - per non dire affollati - da ricordi, da rievocazioni di corpi che si “fondono” e si confondono con i luoghi. Più che a una sovrapposizione o penetrazione corpo – luogo, ha luogo una mise en abîme, una messa in scena dell’epifania della contaminazione.

Si tratta di una teatralizzazione del corpo che non è fine a se stessa rivelando corrispondenze più o meno segrete tra luogo e corpo, ma che diventa instancabile ricerca sul fenomeno della fotografia stessa capace di cogliere l’attimo, la realtà, e al tempo stesso di rivelare affinità elettive insospettate, di evocare immagini segretamente desiderate.

Come si desidera un corpo di spessa e rugosa corteccia adagiato sulle foglie della terra umida che inconsapevolmente emana una forza seduttrice irresistibile. I luoghi – e i corpi – sembrano scegliere Belvedere e non viceversa. Luoghi inquietanti che lo attraggono, che esercitano su di lui una specie di costrizione, che sembrano dettare legge sul modo in cui lui, l’artista, vi si muove. Belvedere si lascia prendere e guidare dai suoi soggetti ma poi prende il sopravvento la sua anima da fotografo-regista che si avvale del “diritto sovrano” del manipolatore, dello sciamano che riprende la realtà mettendola in scena, la dirige, la occulta, la direziona verso altra mete, nuove realtà.

Angels and Abysses Eva Clausen

In Romolo Belvedere’s photographic images everything becomes ''body''. To this artist who clearly has his roots in theatre, physical existence is everything. Not as much in that a body has its own vitality, but rather because it is both Eros and Thanatos.His shots possess ''volume'', depth, they live and swell, as light as a whiff, as sensual and seductive as a breath, the wing stroke of a tangible, easy to grasp yet faintly nostalgic angel.

Belvedere chooses his subjects mainly in the world of fiction – film sets, better when they are turned off, theatres, stages, places where the action has been performed. The gestures are now just memories. Heroes and heroines have left the scene. Only silence is left behind.And still, those places are alive. Or rather, in those places you can feel, quite clearly, the eternal thread of life’s drama, inexorably repeating itself.

These spaces are not peopled by bodies but inhabited - – even crowded - with memories, recollections of bodies mingling and merging into places.Not an overlapping or penetration of body and space; it is rather a mise en abîme, the staging of the epiphany of contamination.It is about the theatricality of the body which is not an end in itself, as it reveals the relations – be they secret or not – between space and body.

It is thus a tireless research into photography as a means of seizing the moment, reality, and in the same time finding unexpected elective affinities, recalling some secretly desired images. Images such as a body of thick wrinkled bark, lying on a bed of leaves and moist earth, unconsciously oozing with an attractive power you can’t resist. The places – and the bodies – seem to choose Belvedere and not vice versa. Disturbing settings he feels attracted to, and somehow he is constrained by, that seemingly lay down the law in the way the artist, himself, moves within them.

At first Belvedere lets himself be guided by his subjects but then his soul prevails – the photographer and director makes use of the ''supreme right'' of the manipulator, the shaman who observes reality and puts it on the stage, directing it, concealing it, guiding it towards different destinations, new realities.
