Group show

The Fruitmarket Gallery is proud to present an exhibition of work from the last two years of the Gallery’s Opt in for Art education programme. The programme aims to engage children and young people aged 7–18 years old with the Gallery’s changing exhibition programme.

The Opt in for Art exhibition features drawings, films, animations, installations, sculptures and objects produced by children and young people during a range of projects and workshops. The young people have been involved in all aspects of the preparation for this exhibition, from making the artwork to curating and marketing the show.

Highlights from this exhibition include a sprawling metropolis made from bourbon and custard cream biscuits, a podcast of a political refugees first experience of the city of Edinburgh and large-scale comic drawings mapped out on the walls. The children and young people’s inspiration for the work comes directly from the Gallery’s exhibition programme and through practical workshops designed around each exhibition.

A woollen yarn sculpture sits on the gallery floor, created by primary school children in an artist-led workshop during the Fred Sandback exhibition. Trenton Doyle Hancock’s madcap The Wayward Thinker inspired the comic book works, and Biscuit Wars, Bourbon vs Custard Cream responds to the playfulness of Dada’s Boys, Identity and Play in Contemporary Art.
