Gabriela Galvan

Haydee Rovirosa Gallery, New York

Turning the gallery into a fantastical realm, the artist unlocks the beauty of common objects with her dream-like landscapes, refractive bubble sculptures, and holographic wall-hangings made of mass-produced materials. She aims at examining the relationship between the characteristics of the materials she uses and the sensations she can evoke from the viewer.

Simple Magic

Gabriela Galván squeezes magic out of the White Cube

Multi-disciplinary artist Gabriela Galván is known for her whimsical environments that are inspired by the transitory and ephemeral nature of her surroundings. Often toying with scale, Galván’s complex spatial intervations include the use of sculpture, video, and collage, while always relying heavily on drawing.

In her exhibition Simple Magic, Galván turns Haydeé Rovirosa Gallery into a fantastical realm where each angle offers a new experience. Galvan unlocks the inherent beauty of common objects with her dream-like landscapes, refractive bubble sculptures, and holographic wall-hangings made of mass-produced materials. Beneath the happy chaos of the exhibition is an underlying concept in which Galván examines the relationship between the characteristics of the materials she uses and the sensations she can evoke from the viewer. The result is an energetic environment filled with enticing color and ephemeral details.

Galván states: "My work is like that of an alchemist’s because I conceive my practice like someone who tries to turn common stones into gold.”

Galván is currently participating in a residency at the:artist:network in New York City and is a recipient of the 2007 Jumex Collection grant. She has exhibited her work internationally at Piano Nobile Space, Geneva, Switzerland; Isola Art Center, Italy; Künstlerhaus Bethanien, Berlin, Germany; Reina Sofia National Center of Arts Museum, Madrid, Spain; Apeejay Media Gallery, New Delhi, India; Osaka Sky Building, Japan; The Mexican Cultural Institute, New York; and Tamayo Contemporary Art Museum, Siqueiros Public Art showroom, Carrillo Gil Art Museum, and the National Museum of Sciences and Arts (MUCA) Roma in Mexico City.
