Puzzles and Pieces

Ron photographs every day on one project or another, and always with delight. He usually has several in progress at the same time. The volume of his work is prodigious, and so is its immense variety. No horizon is too distant for Ron Partridge to explore, and no detail too intimate. Dan Dixon

Michael Dawson Gallery is pleased to present a new exhibition of work by the renowned California photographer Rondal Partridge. Puzzles and Pieces brings to the gallery a collection of Partridge’s contemporary photographs that include detailed studies of everyday objects (tools and coins) as well as plants and animals that flourish around his home in Berkeley, California. The son of photographer Imogen Cunningham, Ron Partridge has been working with photographs since 1922. Having worked closely with the great California photographers such as Dorothea Lange and Ansel Adams, he is truly a photographic luminary of our time.

Partridge has found unique methods of presentation for his photographic studies. In addition to individual hand made platinum photographs, this exhibition will highlight large format assemblages or grid arrangements of the tool, plant, and animal studies that create a unique art object based on the interrelationship between the individual photographs.

Partridge has also engaged his subject matter through the creation of complex photographic sculptures that closely resemble a large Rubik’s Cube (the small, hand held 3-dimensional puzzle that became a world wide phenomenon in the 1980s). The sculptures are constructed from 27 individual cubes with a single photograph.

Partridge has also engaged his subject matter through the creation of complex photographic sculptures that closely resemble a large Rubik Cube (the small, hand held 3-dimensional puzzle that became a world wide phenomena in the 1980s). The sculptures are constructed from 27 individual cubes with a single photograph appearing on each side of the cube. When the cube is properly constructed the viewer experiences a kaleidoscopic image on side of the sculpture. The exhibition will include 3 of these unique objects featuring, botanical, animal, and human figure studies.

Partridge has spent seven decades building a body of work that reflects his aesthetic integrity, eccentric temperament, and fascination with every aspect of the world around him. Puzzles and Pieces is evidence that Ron partridge continues to produce art that is as singular as the man himself.
