L’esposizione presenta per la prima volta a livello internazionale il lavoro pittorico di una delle personalità artistiche più conosciute e apprezzate, attraverso 35 tele di medie e grandi dimensioni e 450 disegni e acquarelli su carta.

Galleria d’Arte Moderna e Contemporanea di Bergamo presenta la personale di Vanessa Beecroft, una delle personalità artistiche più conosciute e apprezzate. Per la prima volta a livello internazionale viene esposto il lavoro pittorico dell’artista, fondamentale sin dagli esordi della sua carriera, ma spesso poco conosciuto al grande pubblico. Il progetto espositivo, a cura di Giacinto Di Pietrantonio, si propone di offrire ai visitatori una prospettiva esauriente ed articolata su un particolare aspetto della produzione di Vanessa Beecroft, un’occasione unica per sottolineare la radice pittorica e figurativa di tutta la sua pratica creativa, attraverso 35 tele di medie e grandi dimensioni e 450 disegni e acquarelli su carta.

Tutto il suo lavoro, infatti, nasce dal disegno e dalla pittura, mezzi alla base delle sue ben note performance e fotografie. Nei suoi celeberrimi tableaux vivant i corpi delle modelle sono trattati secondo un alfabeto cromatico e compositivo con un chiaro rimando al linguaggio della pittura; allo stesso modo abiti e capigliature trovano ispirazione a volte nelle atmosfere metafisiche di Giorgio de Chirico ed altre nella pittura antica, dal Rinascimento fiammingo fino a Botticelli e Piero della Francesca passando per i Preraffaelliti. La pittura di Vanessa Beecroft trova la sua ragione formale nel disegno moderno di tipo “espressionista”, nei corpi segnati dal desiderio e dalla nevrosi di Egon Schiele o nella sintesi del tratto matissiano.

La mostra si sviluppa al secondo piano del museo, seguendo un percorso espositivo che alterna un’ampia selezione di opere degli esordi dell’artista nei primi anni ’90 a lavori inediti di piccolo e grande formato, fino a comprendere interventi site specific come affreschi nelle sale della galleria. La personale indaga uno degli aspetti meno noti del lavoro di Vanessa Beecroft, un aspetto intimo e privato, eppure fondativo di tutta la sua opera.

Vanessa Beecroft è nata a Genova (1969) e attualmente vive e lavora a New York. Personali le sono state dedicate da numerose istituzioni internazionali come: l’Institute of Contemporary Art di Londra nel 1997; il Moderna Museet di Stoccolma, la Fondation Cartier pour l’Art Contemporain di Parigi e il Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum di New York nel 1998; il Museum of Contemporary Art di San Diego e il Museum of Contemporary Art di Chicago nel 1999; il Guggenheim Museum di Venezia e la Kunsthalle di Vienna nel 2001; la Neue Nationalgalerie di Berlino nel 2005 e la National Gallery di Londra nel 2006.

Vanessa Beecroft ha partecipato, inoltre, alla Biennale di Sydney del 2000; alla Biennale di Venezia del 1997 e del 2001 e alla Bienal Internacional a San Paolo del Brasile del 2002. Vanessa Beecroft è nota al pubblico internazionale per le sue performance e per le fotografie che ritraggono modelle seminude e immobili negli spazi delle gallerie e dei musei più prestigiosi del mondo. Facendo della condizione femminile l’ampio territorio della sua ricerca e utilizzando come materiale primario il corpo della donna, Beecroft affronta alcuni degli aspetti più controversi della realtà sociale e culturale contemporanea tra cui il rapporto con il cibo e la sessualità e l’ossessione per la bellezza e la forma fisica. Il lavoro dell’artista è costruito attingendo da scultura, pittura, fotografia, cinema e teatro, tutti ambiti che appartengono al suo lavoro senza che la complessità delle opere possa essere ricondotta ad un’unica categoria. In questo senso spesso nel suo lavoro sono riscontrabili riferimenti al mondo del cinema e dell’arte e, in particolar modo, della pittura.

From 9 May to 29 July 2007 GAMeC – Galleria d’Arte Moderna e Contemporanea di Bergamo will be presenting a solo show dedicated to Vanessa Beecroft.
For the first time at international level, the artist’s painted work will be displayed. This has been fundamental since the start of her career but is often little known by the public at large. The exhibition, curated by Giacinto Di Pietrantonio, will occupy four rooms on the second floor of the museum and include approximately 350 drawings, 30 medium-sized oil portraits, and more than 20 large canvases of which 2 are from the early 1990s and 14 have been specially prepared for the exhibition at GAMeC. The show will offer visitors an exhaustive look at a particular aspect of Vanessa Beecroft’s output, and provides a unique chance to emphasise the pictorial and figurative roots that underlie all her art.
Her work, even her well known performances and photographs, originates in drawings and painting. In her famous tableaux vivants, her characters are dressed and set out in a manner that is clearly related to pictorial language. At the same time their clothes and hairstyles may be inspired by the metaphysical world of Giorgio de Chirico, the art of antiquity, Italian - Botticelli and Piero della Francesca – and Flemish Renaissance or the Pre-Raphaelites.
In turn, Vanessa Beecroft’s painting has its raison d’être in “expressionist” modern drawing, in Egon Schiele’s bodies marked by desire or neurosis, or in the synthesis of Matisse’s line-drawing which she expresses in her own artistic language.

The exhibition will examine one of the least known aspects of Vanessa Beecroft’s output: it is both intimate and private, yet it is also fundamental to her work in general.

Vanessa Beecroft is known internationally for her performances and for photographs of semi-nude and immobile women in the spaces of some of the most important museums and galleries of the world. Taking the female condition as her field of investigation and using the female body as her material, Beecroft tackles some of the most controversial aspects of contemporary culture and society, for example, the relationship that exists between food and sexuality, and society’s obsession with beauty and physical appearance. Her work draws on sculpture, painting, photography, cinema and theatre but without any one being dominant. Thus we see references to the world of cinema and art, in particular painting.

The exhibition will be accompanied by a bilingual catalogue published by Electa (Milan), with a text by Giacinto Di Pietrantonio. The catalogue will discuss Beecroft's painting exhaustively, not just the works on show, but almost all the paintings and drawings that the artist has produced till the present day.

Vanessa Beecroft was born in Genoa in 1969 and lives and works in Los Angeles. She has had many personal shows around the world, for instance Fondation Cartier pour l’Art Contemporain, Paris (1995, 1998); Institute of Contemporary Art (ICA), London (1997); Moderna Museet, Stockholm, Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum, New York and Galleria d’Arte Moderna in Bologna (1998); Museum of Contemporary Art (MCA), San Diego and Museum of Contemporary Art (MCA), Sydney (1999); Peggy Guggenheim Collection, Venice and Kunsthalle Wien (2001); Castello di Rivoli, Rivoli (TO) (2003); Kunsthalle Bielefeld (2004); Neue Nationalgalerie, Berlin (2005) and National Gallery, London (2006).
The artist has also participated in the Venice Biennale (1997, 2001), the Whitney Biennial, New York (2000), and the Bienal Internacional in Sao Paulo (2002).

From 4 April to 27 May 2007 GAMeC - Galleria d'Arte Moderna e Contemporanea di Bergamo will hold a solo exhibition by Enzo Cucchi in the Spazio Zero. Curated by Giacinto Di Pietrantonio, it will be the first such show in a public institution devoted entirely to the artist's sculptural work.
The exhibition will contain works dating from the early 1990s until today and include more than forty bronzes, a large ceramic work, and a canvas, entitled Stalin, measuring more or less 6x6 metres made specially for GAMeC. Placed on the far wall of the large room, the canvas will provide the background to the show.

From 4 April to 29 July 2007 GAMeC - Galleria d'Arte Moderna e Contemporanea di Bergamo will present Men with music, a solo exhibition dedicated to Johannes Kahrs, one of the most outstanding figures in German and international painting since the 1990s.
The exhibition at GAMeC will be held in the five rooms on the first floor of the gallery and will be the first solo show of the artist in an Italian museum. Curated by Alessandro Rabottini, the exhibition will feature approximately thirty paintings, some of which have never been presented to the public, and others already in public and private collections in Europe. These will be laid out in a site-specific itinerary conceived by the artist to suit the display areas of the museum. The theme of the exhibition will be the representation of identity and the male body in relation to sexuality, violence, desire and loss.
Kahrs' images are charged with mystery and sensuality; they attest the artist's interest in the fragility of human existence, and our darker and our most intimate aspects.
