Signs Of Our Time
Marlene Creates: Signs Of Our Time is a nationally touring exhibition of
photography that documents the interaction of language and landscape,
through photographic installations created over the course of a decade
by Marlene Creates, a contemporary photo-based artist from Newfoundland.
"The photography-based art of Marlene Creates has long dealt with the
relationship between marking and landscape," writes curator Robin
Metcalfe. "Her photographs function as a means of documenting that
relationship and posing critical questions about how our perceptions of
the land are constructed through language." Creates' photography
reframes public signs which are commonly used to mark city limits or
tourist attractions as a way to evoke aspects of local or regional
identity.
The exhibition is accompanied by a bilingual catalogue, with essays by
world-renowned art critic, Lucy Lippard and exhibition curator, Robin
Metcalfe.
Marlene Creates lives in Portugal Cove, Newfoundland. For twenty-five
years her work has been an exploration of the relationship between human
experience and geography - both natural and built environments - and the
impact they have on each other. Since the 1970s, she has participated in
over 200 solo and group exhibitions across Canada, and in Ireland,
Scotland, England, France, Denmark and the United States. She has taught
visual arts at the University of Ottawa, Algonquin College and the Nova
Scotia College of Art and Design. Marlene has been a guest lecturer at
over 100 institutions including the National Gallery of Canada, the
Glasgow School of Art, the University of Oxford and many Canadian
universities.
Her artwork is in numerous public collections including the Department
of Foreign Affairs of the Government of Canada, the Government of
Newfoundland & Labrador, the National Gallery of Canada and The Rooms
Provincial Art Gallery in St. John's. She received the 1996 Artist of
the Year Award from the Newfoundland & Labrador Arts Council. In 2001
she was elected to the Royal Canadian Academy of the Arts.
