Madras (Tamil Nadu, India), 5 luglio 2007: Il 18 luglio si inaugura ORGANIC la nuova personale indiana di Davide Grazioli (Milano, 1972) nella quale verrà presentata l’installazione inedita dal titolo Before we go.

Ancora una volta è l’incenso naturale il medium principale attraverso il quale l’artista esprime in forma rituale la più attuale paura contemporanea: lo squilibrio ambientale. La combustibilità delle ultime sculture di Grazioli si inscrive infatti nella sua ricerca sulla transitorietà della vita e dell’umanità.

Se nella precedente installazione presentata a MiArt 2007* la vita, tutta, era simboleggiata attraverso gli animali in via di estinzione, questa volta il riferimento al genere umano diventa più esplicito. Su un tappeto di fiori di loto bianchi campeggiano decine di teschi di incenso in alcuni dei quali sono ancora visibili dei denti d’oro.

E’ l’idea di “offerta” che spinge Grazioli a mettere in bilico tra due dimensioni - il qui e l’altrove - l’intera installazione che ha in sé la possibilità di “andare in fumo”, trasportando così il suo messaggio.
In aggiunta all’incenso per la prima volta entrano negli ingredienti delle sculture dell’artista, l’oro e la mirra che evocano ulteriormente la simbologia del dono.

Anche se la presenza della morte aleggia in modo esplicito, Before we go resta ambivalente e circolare come gli altri lavori di questo artista. La mirra infatti era utilizzata nella imbalsamazione dei corpi e rappresenta (così come nel dono dei magi) l’immortalità e la rinascita.

Se il futuro ambientale protagonista di questo lavoro è imprevedibile, una cosa appare invece certa: dal rogo dei teschi tra la cenere, resteranno i denti d’oro che sembrano alludere all’illusorietà del possesso e del consumo.

Madras (Tamil Nadu, India) July 5th 2007: On July 18th the Italian artist Davide Grazioli (Milan 1972) will open “ORGANIC” his latest exhibition in India. In this occasion the artist will present a new site specific installation entitled Before we go.

Once again it is a very peculiar material as the organic incense the medium through which the artist expresses in a ritual form the most contemporary worry: the ecological unbalance.
The burnability of Grazioli’s latest sculptures represents the evolution of his quest on transiency and fragility of life and humanity.

But if in his previous installation - presented in April 2007٭ in Milan - life in its broad sense was symbolized by the endangered species, this time its reference to mankind has become more explicit: dozens of incense skulls are lying on a carpet of white lotus flowers and in some of these skulls some golden teeth are still visible.

Once again is the idea of offer that pushes Grazioli to put his entire work on the border between two different dimensions: the installation appears soundly “here”, but it also carries in itself the chance of being “elsewhere”, which means in smoke.

Significant for the artist in this work is the presence of two new ingredients: gold and myrrh which stress the concept of gift. But despite the fact that the presence of death is clearly evoked, Before we go
remains ambivalent and circular as typically seen in various other works by Davide Grazioli.
In fact the myrrh - like the gift of the three Kings to Jesus - was used in the conservation of human bodies after the death and therefore represents immortality and rebirth.

Even though the environmental future is not known, one thing is certain: after the burning of one of Grazioli’s sculptures, the skull would go in smoke but the golden teeth would remain among the ashes triggering a reflection about the illusion of possession.
