Excerps from the visual arts section:

Las Meninas
Focus on contemporary Spanish artist Manolo Valdés in Esplanade Park. The sculptures were inspired by the famous 17th century painting of the same name by Diego Velázquez and will inhabit the park from the Eurovision Song Contest in early May until September.

In cooperation with the Embassy of Spain, Helsinki

1000 Families – The Family Album of Planet Earth
Over the past four years Uwe Ommer (Germany) has toured five continents and 130 countries, capturing for ever a thousand unique family portraits on film. The families are portrayed in their home environments, using the same camera and lighting against a white background. Each family is genuinely representative of the culture and customs of its community at the turn of the millennium. Fifty of the 1,000 portraits will be on display at Tokoinranta. All the 1,000 portraits and families are, however, featured in the exhibition book on sale during the Helsinki Festival.

Our Land!
Finland as seen through the eyes of photographers. Sixties Helsinki, its streets and people, come to life in the nostalgic black-and-white photos of Ismo Hölttä. The series Jos/Om/If by Stefan Bremer voices what we dare not even think: the possibility of war. The exhibition at the Tennis Palace will, for the duration of the Helsinki Festival, be spreading out into the Lasipalatsi square as part of the downtown street scene.

Tarkovsky by Docpoint
A series of intimate documentaries about the legendary film director Andrei Tarkovsky as a tribute to him on what would have been his 75th birthday.

Anna Retulainen
A feast of oil paintings both strong and sensitive by Anna Retulainen at the
Amos Anderson Art Museum.

Iranian Abbas Kiarostami is a humanist, humorist and poet of the silver screen. A major service to culture from the Finnish Film Archive in screening this unique retrospective series of his films.

A series of films by Hans Jürgen Syberberg, one of Germany’s best-known directors.
