Benjamin A. Jones and Michael A. Pierce
Benjamin A. Jones will be showing in the Main Gallery. He was the winner of the 2006 Richmond Outdoor Sculpture Exhibition award.
Ben says “I choose found, inimitable pieces to work in conjunction with fabricated forms to open a discussion. The ready-mades I have used in this body of work are in my possession or have come across my path as a result of their failure; discarded and terminated from their past existence. I am able to then build meaning and compose new and original forms by embracing the idea of reinvention and reappropriation. I resurrect the components into a new existence as a part of a sculpture, an existence with a completely new agenda, bent on sparking a thought, revealing a suggestion,
and/or provoking a question.”
Michael A. Pierce is showing a new series of oil pastel, graphite, and wax drawings in the Helena Davis and Frable Galleries. Michael says “I’m placing a square image of a man's face beside a second identically-sized square image of a rabbit's face. With these pairs of images I’d like you to consider the concept of male identity, beauty and sexuality; at the same time I want you to question just how safe (or unsafe) you feel examining these issues.”
Opening Reception Fourth Friday, September 28, 7:00 – 10:00 pm.
