First Moment of Truth

The driver jumps back into his cab and starts to reverse the lorry, back down the road. Checking his wing mirror he notices an Evening Standard teaser bill, “Cigarettes Beer Wine Up”. There is a crunch and a slight bump as he reverses over a road sign left out in the street. The world is full of signs and a cacophony of texts struggle to grab our attention. But what happens when we move beyond the first moment of truth and into a contemplative space, where an object’s story unfolds and teaser bills become poetry?

Eva Weinmayr collects the discarded subtexts of society and searches their surfaces for meaning. Having moved to London from Munich she was fascinated by the unfamiliar language of the streets, from the teaser bills with their nonsensical sentence construction to mangled road signs left by the roadside. She takes these unwanted remnants from the city’s daily life and turns them into reflections of their existence, subjecting them to rigorous repetition until they yield their individual truth. For her first solo exhibition at MOT International she will show a new road sign, a teaser bill and a new installation.

Eva Weinmayr is represented by MOT International and has had a number of solo exhibitions and projects including,Yellow, Yellow, Pink, for Quivid, Munich; Love Your Voice, recording workshop at Matt’s Gallery, London; two person exhibition with Gustav Metzger, Kunstraum Munich; Yes No, two person exhibition with Richard Forster, Vane Contemporary Arts, Newcastle; Hear the Tiny Auto Horns, When They Tiny Blow, t1+2 artspace, London and Road Signs, Nusser & Baumgart, Munich. Her work has been exhibited in numerous international group shows at venues including ICA London; ArtFutures; Kunstverein Wolfsburg; John Hansard Gallery, Southampton; Chisenhale Gallery, London and Gimpel Fils Gallery, London. She is currently showing in Frozen Waves, Istanbul alongside Babak Ghazi, Mustafa Hulusi, Paul Snowden, Mark Titchner and has forthcoming exhibitions in ICA, Philadelphia; and British Embassy, Paris.
