L'amour de Monte-Cristo
Berlin artist Jonathan Meese returns to Paris with an installation of drawings in our new exhibition space Impasse Beaubourg.
At 35, Jonathan Meese is well known for his large colorful paintings, saturated with references to pop culture, art, movies or Germany’s dark history. Considered one of the rising stars of vibrant Berlin scene, his work has already been subject to several solo museum shows, including the Essl Museum in Austria; De Appel, Amsterdam; Le Magasin, Grenoble and Deichtorhallen, Hamburg.
In addition to his work as painter and sculptor, Jonathan Meese has also developed a strong interest in performance and theater. Recent performances include a solo performance at the Tate Modern London in 2005, a collaborative performance with painter Peter Doig in Marfa, Texas, in 2006 and one with Matthew Barney in New York in 2007.
For the last three years, he has been collaborating with the Volksbühne Theater in Berlin. After doing the set and costume design of two plays by highly controversial director Frank Castorf, he directed for the first time his own play "De Frau" presented in Berlin in Spring 2007.
The exhibition "L’Amour de Monte Cristo" (The Love of Monte Cristo, after Alexandre Dumas’ famous novel) will consist of a series of drawings inspired by his performances.
On October 26, 2007 at 8 pm the Goethe Institute in Paris will host a performance by the artist: "La Vengeance de Monte-Cristo" (The Revenge of Monte Cristo).
