It is Nguyen's artistic experiment to transform rooms photographically. In the series Mobile she succeeds in doing that in an infatuating and melancholic way. Her work show places or landscape that is occupied with gestic and emotion. The photo is less documentation than a window into our perception of emotional state.
Mobile (Photography)
Loan Nguyen was born 1977 in the French speaking part of Switzerland. Her parents are originally from Vietnam. She shows a contemporary acquaintance with the photographic medium giving that her photographs are somewhere between fiction and documentation. In opposition to a world that seems more and more abstract Nguyen’s photos are poetic narratives. Loan Nguyen is one of many promising talents of the young Swiss photo scene, which the Museum Winterthur in 2006 devoted a whole exhibition to: “Real Fantasy – New Photography from Switzerland”.
It is Nguyen’s artistic experiment to transform rooms photographically. In the series Mobile she succeeds in doing that in an infatuating and melancholic way. Her work show places or landscape that is occupied with gestic and emotion. The photo is less documentation than a window into our perception of emotional state. Empty or abandoned places get a new dimension through light and colour thereby appearing as fragile beings. This concentrated experience of place is also present in the photos in which the artist places herself. Loan Nguyen uses her physical presence in another way than Cindy Sherman or the Finnish artist Elina Brotherus. With gestics and stances she opens up aesthetic and emotional qualities of the place. The subject keeps its distance and the place its poesy.
