American Painting, 1950-1975

Color field paintings are expansive canvases washed with flat areas of solid color. Color as Field is the first exhibition to bring together the works of major color field painters. The show features about 40 color field paintings and explores their sources, meaning, and impact.

The exhibition, which continues through February 3, includes paintings by color field artists Helen Frankenthaler, Morris Louis, Kenneth Noland, Jules Olitski, Larry Poons, and Frank Stella, along with their precursors, important abstract expressionists like Sam Francis, Mark Rothko, and Clyfford Still.

Color as Field is organized by the American Federation of Arts. This exhibition is made possible, in part, by grants from the Henry Luce Foundation and the National Endowment for the Arts as part of American Masterpieces: Three Centuries of Artistic Genius.

Additional local funding is provided by the citizens who support the Scientific and Cultural Facilities District and the generous donors to the Annual Leadership Campaign. Promotional support is provided by The Denver Post.
