comunicato stampa

The International Fine Print Dealers Association presents INK Miami 2007, the only fair in Miami dedicated to works on paper during Art Basel Miami Beach. INK Miami 2007 returns to the Suites of Dorchester, 1850 Collins Avenue at 19th Street, just steps away from the Miami Beach Convention Center. The show will open a day earlier on Wednesday December 5th with a Breakfast Preview at 10 am and run through Sunday December 9th. Following its successful 2006 debut, this year’s fair features an expanded roster of twenty exhibitors with nearly all last year’s dealers returning and dealers Susan Sheehan Gallery, Mary Ryan Gallery, Dranoff Fine Art and Sims Reed of London joining the show along with publishers Dolan/Maxwell and Riverhouse van Straaten. All exhibitors are members of the International Fine Print Dealers Association and this show highlights the strengths of the organization’s dealers in modern and contemporary masters as well as the vitality of printmaking among artists of international renown as evidenced by its many publishers.

Visitors to the Fair will have first look not only at many new and unusual projects but many rare-to-market masterworks of the genre as well. On view at Susan Sheehan Gallery, an array of late 20th century gems including some rare Ellsworth Kelly prints from the 1970s. Dranoff Fine Art will show the etching entitled “Boogie Man” by former graffiti artist Barnaby Furnas. A product of Furnas’ first experiment with printmaking, each etching in this edition of forty has been individually hand painted by the artist. Mary Ryan Gallery arrives with brand new editions by Yvonne Jacquette and Donald Sultan. The Sultan project, entitled “12 Colors”, is a set of twelve screenprinted poppies in which the enamel-like surface of the flowers actually “pops” out from a textured tar-like black background which was created using nine layers of colors.

Art Basel veterans, Crown Point Press, will introduce several new publications including an aquatint and softground etching by Amy Sillman and four new soap ground and spitbite aquatints by Swiss artist Pia Fries. Jim Kempner Fine Art will show an extensive catalog of 20th century classics including Roy Lichtenstein’s iconic “Before the Mirror.” William Shearburn Gallery returns to South Beach with works by Louise Bourgeois, an artist obsessively drawn to printmaking over her career. Marlborough Graphics will showcase 20th century masterworks along with new editions by Paula Rego, Tomás Sánchez, Manolo Valdés, and Richard Estes. For artists Sánchez and Estes, these projects are a return to printmaking after many years.

Works which exemplify the innovative manner in which artists of the ‘60s and ‘70s experimented with commercial printing techniques will be much in evidence. On offer at Charles M. Young Fine Prints and Drawings, LLC: Dieter Roth’s untitled color offset and silkscreen print from “Six Piccadillies” (1969-70) printed recto and verso from the suite of six inspired by tourist post cards of London’s Piccadilly Circus. Richard Hamilton’s “Fashion Plate” (1969-70), a photo-offset lithograph and screenprint with collage elements printed by photography darling David Bailey and retouched with cosmetics by the artist will be on view at Sims Reed which completes the continuum with Russell Young’s screenprint ‘mug shot’ of Sid Vicious published in 2006.

Cuban artists will debut new editions at this year’s Fair. Along with their signature prints, Mixografia® will premiere “El Nadador (The Swimmer)” by Kcho (Alexis Leyva Machado). The Mixografia print, on handmade paper, pictures a skeletal boat, an example of the artist’s tendency to use symbols implying the presence of water in order to convey ideas about migration and travel. Riverhouse van Straaten debuts four new etchings with chine collé by sculptor Maria Elena Gonzalez, each in an edition of 25. Esterio Segura and Cuban art collective Los Carpinteros will be on view at Florida’s Graphicstudio along with Christian Marclay, Trisha Brown, Allan McCollum, Esterio Segura, Alex Katz, James Rosenquist, Janaina Tschape, Vik Muniz, William Wegman, Kiki Smith, and Burt Barr.

Tandem Press will show works from Robert Cottingham’s new lithograph series “An American Alphabet” and large-scale monoprints by Nicola López, each one made using a unique combination of lithography and relief mylar. Diane Villani Editions will display striking abstract two-color etchings by Joanne Greenbaum whose work will be seen in the Saatchi Gallery’s upcoming exhibition “The Triumph of Painting: Abstract America” opening in 2008. New mixed media monoprints by Bostonian artist Cheryl Warrick will be on view at Dolan/Maxwell. Durham Press will premiere several new editions including complex screenprints by Alison Elizabeth Taylor, Roland Fischer and several colorful woodcut monoprints from avid printmaker Polly Apfelbaum. Shark’s Ink. will show color lithographs by painter and tattoo artist Don Ed Hardy and a new color lithograph with chine collé by Betty Woodman. Jane Hammond’s new project “Spells and Incantations” will also debut at Shark’s. Hammond says “I think of this piece as an amulet for propitious things in the journey of this life and beyond.”

Solo Impression Inc will present a series of color lithographs embellished with glitter by Joyce Kozloff, a lithograph entitled “The Noble Savage” by Kent Henricksen on cotton brocade with digitized embroidery and “Black Skull” by Angelo Filomeno also made with digitized embroidery on black silk shantung with appliqué. Paulson Press will be featuring new color sugarlift etchings by Chris Johannson, a new edition color softground and spitbite aquatint etching by Ross Bleckner and works by Loretta Bennett of Gee’s Bend fame. The Arion Press will bring a widely-anticipated project, an edition of 200 poems by Emily Dickinson with prints by Kiki Smith on every page. Entitled "Sampler," it combines the sampling of Dickinson's more than 1,700 poems with a reference to Smith's inspiration in embroidered samplers, the edition of 400 will be printed in two colors on hand-made paper specially commissioned for this project.

INK Miami exhibitors have been selected from the prestigious IFPDA membership for their ability to offer the best contemporary works on paper by today’s most important contemporary artists. They reflect the vitality of the contemporary membership of the IFPDA. Selection was made by the IFPDA’s organizing committee for the Fair, led by Glenn Dranoff (Dranoff Fine Art, NY), Paula Panczenko (Tandem Press, Madison, WI), Bud Shark (Shark’s Ink, Lyons, CO) and Dianne Villani (Diane Villani Editions, NY).

What is a print?
An original print is a work of art on paper which has been conceived by the artist to be realized as a print, rather than as a copy of a work in another medium. Prints are produced by drawing or carving a composition on a hard surface such as a wood block, metal plate, or stone. This surface is then inked and the image is transferred to paper by the application of pressure, thus creating an “impression” or print. Unlike paintings or drawings, prints usually exist in multiple impressions, each of which is pulled from the inked surface. The total number of impressions made is called an edition. Artists began to sign and number each impression around the start of the 20th century.
