Out/Of Place is a series of recent landscapes and figurative paintings by Toronto based, Galt-raised artist Brigitte Nowak. Using the very deliberate painting technique of egg tempera, the artist explores the interaction between the human and natural worlds, and the fine line between observation and illusion.
Her representations include that most Canadian of icons, the canoe, alongside images of children and adolescents. These images examine both the idea of an emerging self-awareness and of homecoming, a return to familiar places.
Brigitte Nowak is a painter and printmaker who was born in Germany and grew up in Cambridge (Galt), Ontario. She graduated from the University of Guelph and currently lives in Toronto. Her work has been exhibited in numerous solo, group and juried exhibitions in Canada and the United States.
