Mallman’s interest and artistic focus lies in how powerful people communicate beyond their words. In his drawings – graphite on wood panels - he explores and exposes the many insidious ways that power play is exercised. Having worked for a number of years as a graphic designer, he is very aware of how people interact in professional and political situations. Postures and gestures that punctuate verbal exchanges in these environments display, in Mallman’s words, “a non-verbal social hierarchy.” These gestural forms of communication are consciously used to sway, if not subjugate, the listener. He draws archetypes of powerbrokers gleaned from television, magazines or the internet.
Mallman lives and works in Los Angeles and received his BFA in 1994 from the Milwaukee Institute of Art and Design, Milwaukee. Since graduation he has been in a number of group shows in California, Virginia, Colorado, Wisconsin and Georgia. This will be Mallman’s fourth solo exhibition.
