Martin Richman comes from an English seaside town. His early ex periences were played out
against the backdrop of exotic fairgrounds and gre y seascapes made
alive with summer lights. He started his professional life in the Rock and Roll business as a
top lighting man working for acts s uch as Pink Floyd, Jimi Hendrix and The
Ramones. He subsequently decid ed to become an artist and now uses a variety of materials that
conduct or c hannel light to create magical artworks.
Richman's work deals with altering perceptions of the normal, rendering the m fantastical and
full of imaginative possibilities.
He comments: 'A space recalled in
memory affects our perceptions of the ones we live in now. These are transitional spaces that
take us outside of our daily life and are perhaps fleetingly retrieved,
allowing slippage through a mental membrane.'
At Dominic Berning's intimate salon space, domestic scale pieces will be on view. Berning's
space is above the Electricity Showrooms on Hoxton Square, the original
power supply source for the East End of London.
For the duration of the show, Richman window
installations and a towering structure of light columns on the roof will
light up thespace, making it a beacon for passers-by.
At Rhodes + Mann a monumental set of steps carved out of a light conducting plastic will glow
at the front of the gallery; a massive, floor to ceiling whirligig, studded
with fairy lights, will spin round in the main space, whi le a more contemplative, subdued space
at the rear of the gallery will be us ed as a projection room for a layered
film of old family photographs.
Dichromatic film on the Gallery windows will create
spectacular kaleidoscopic light effects, visible from the street.
The exhibition will tour to Aspex Gallery, Portsmouth and The Customs House ,South Shields.
