Party at the American Academy è la prima delle tre mostre per la stagione 2007-08 del programma Fine Arts dell'Accademia Britannica, a cura di Jacopo Benci. La mostra comprende opere di otto artisti (Aisling Hedgecock, Anthony Faroux, Cian Donnelly, Colin Langridge, John Walter, Leslie Matthews, Lindsay Seers, Spartacus Chetwynd) e due architetti (Harriet Harriss, Prisca Thielmann). Il titolo della mostra fa riferimento a un evento che ha stimolato "il senso di un proposito comune" fra gli artisti ed architetti.

"Sette artisti e due architetti premiati con residenze all'Accademia Britannica si ritrovano a vivere assieme a Roma dietro una grandiosa facciata progettata da Lutyens. La città è straordinaria, lo stile di vita comune è strano. Le ragioni per cui i nove si trovano là sono divergenti, i loro progetti sono disparati e le loro motivazioni variabili - ma l'essere a Roma li lega insieme. Una sera del novembre 2007, tutti i protagonisti decidono di andare a una festa in maschera all'Accademia Americana dall'altra parte della città. Ventiquattr'ore prima del ballo sembra improbabile che i nove riusciranno a preparare i costumi richiesti, ma improvvisamente, nasce il senso di un proposito comune e la frenesia di fare. Potrà sembrare quasi perverso, ma quella sera la cosa più liberatoria per tutti gli artisti fu di fare qualcosa che non dovevano pensare come arte e che non doveva nemmeno necessariamente sembrare tale. Questo punto di svolta ha dato l'impulso a questa mostra/evento. Gli artisti si sono accordati sul fatto che la mostra abbia la stessa spontaneità e idea di cooperazione della sera in cui erano andati all'Accademia Americana. Vogliono esporre in modi che siano al di fuori delle loro usuali strategie. Hanno un'opportunità per sperimentare, correre dei rischi e camminare su arti cresciuti ex-novo che potranno reggerli o farli cadere - ma in un modo o nell'altro il pubblico e gli artisti si ritroveranno assieme in una nuova situazione. Nessuno sa cosa aspettarsi, ma tutti sperano che ciò che avverrà - sia inatteso."

Party at the American Academy is the first of three exhibitions of the British School at Rome Fine Arts programme for 2007-08, co-ordinated by Jacopo Benci. The exhibition includes works by eight artists (Aisling Hedgecock, Anthony Faroux, Cian Donnelly, Colin Langridge, John Walter, Leslie Matthews, Lindsay Seers, Spartacus Chetwynd) and two architects (Harriet Harriss, Prisca Thielmann). The title for the exhibition refers to an event that triggered "a sense of collective purpose" among the artists and architects.

"Nine recipients of fine arts awards at the BSR find themselves living together behind a grand Lutyens façade in Rome. The city is amazing, the communal lifestyle strange. The reasons for the nine being there are divergent, their projects disparate and their motivations variable - but being in Rome binds them together. On a night in November 2007, all the protagonists plan to go to a costume party at the American Academy across the city. Twenty-four hours before the ball it looks unlikely that the dress code will be met, but suddenly, there is a sense of collective purpose and a frenzy of making begins. It seems almost perverse, but the most liberating thing for all the artists that night was to make something that they didn't have to think of as art and which didn't necessarily even look like art. This watershed moment provides the momentum for the exhibition/event. They agree that they want the show to have that same spontaneity and idea of co-operation that occurred the night they went to the American Academy. They want to exhibit in ways that would be outside of their usual strategies. They have a chance to experiment, take risks and walk out on a newly-growing limb that may hold and may break - but either way the audience and the artists will end up in a new situation together. No one knows what to expect, but everyone hopes that what it will be - is unexpected."
