Prints & Drawings, 1901-1971. This exhibition encompasses seventy years of Picasso's career, beginning with a 1901 drawing - a self portrait of the master in his studio. In this seminal work one can already see the beginnings of an angular interpretation of human form.
This exhibition encompasses seventy years of Picasso’s career, beginning with a 1901 drawing - a self portrait of the master in his studio. In this seminal work one can already see the beginnings of an angular interpretation of human form. A proto-cubist still life – an etching from 1908 - and a large, full blown cubist drawing from the key years of 1913-1914 will also be shown.
The dating of the latter work is the tipping point that marks the inception of the cubist period proper. These early images, abstract though they are, display Picasso’s absolute virtuosity as a draftsman, which belies clichéd ideas as to modern art being anti-classical. This theme - the primacy of drawing - characterizes the main thrust of the balance of Picasso’s output as a draftsman and printmaker, and is therefore the inescapable thesis of the entire show.
