In High Fashion. The exhibition offers a glimpse at an unknown facet of the work of the great 20th-century American photographer. Forty years after the artist's death, some of his original prints for Vanity Fair and Vogue are only now available to the public.
Edward Steichen (1879–1973) was one of the most important, creative and controversial photographers of the 20th century. This exhibition is the first comprehensive presentation of Steichen’s original prints of his work for the fashion and glamour industry. When this well-known artist-photographer first decided to work for ‘Vogue’ and ‘Vanity Fair’ in 1923, he was deliberately bridging the divide between art and commerce.
For Steichen it was perfectly natural that the fashion photographer should also be regarded as the ‘auteur’ of his own work, as an artist who happened to be honing his skills in a commercial context. Concurrently with the exhibition in Kunsthaus Zürich of about 180 works from the Condé Nast Archives, the Musée de l’Elysée in Lausanne will present a retrospective of Steichen’s œuvre as a whole.
Organized by the Musée de l'Elysée, Lausanne, and the Foundation for the Exhibition of Photography, Minneapolis, in collaboration with Kunsthaus Zürich.
