The Scenic Eye

Guangdong Museum of Art, Guangzhou

Starting point and thesis of the exhibition is the new understanding of theatre and fine arts since the 1960s. The fine arts of the present day have long since taken over forms of the theatre. And theatre is putting on stage, i.e. enacting, more and more pictures and signs, making the wordless acting of the body into a new domain. The show is a dialogue of 2 categories of art in a close and mutual relationship. Such objects as installations, photographs, plates, etc., were created by artists Carlfriedrich Claus, Olaf Metzel, Katharina Sieverding, Rosemarie Trockel, Gunther Uecker and Wolf Vostell.

Starting point and thesis of the ifa exhibition named "The Scenic Eye" is the new understanding of theatre and fine arts since the 1960s. The fine arts of the present day have long since taken over forms of the theatre. And theatre is putting on stage, i.e. enacting, more and more pictures and signs, making the wordless acting of the body into a new domain.

Against this background, the following question can be posed: what have both forms of art perceived of the development, and how have they benefited from each other? Curator Wolfgang Storch asked nineteen different men and women artists to enter into an imaginary dialogue with the theatre as medium. Their task was to reflect upon the interplay of direction, production, stage, actor/actress, and audience.

What has emerged: works of art in which – some free, some based on literary material – strategies of their own artistic conceptions were applied to the theatre. Thus the exhibition is like a clear and vivid dialogue of two categories of art in a close and mutual relationship. Such objects as installations, photographs, plates, etc., were created by artists Carlfriedrich Claus, Olaf Metzel, Katharina Sieverding, Rosemarie Trockel, Günther Uecker and Wolf Vostell.
