Gabriele Basilico is the winner of Premio Astroc 2007
This photographer and architect is one of the most
internationally acclaimed creators due to his studies
of the urban landscape. For over forty years, he has
carried out personal research projects as well as public
and institutional commissions.
His first project was Milano, ritratti di fabriche (work
shot in Milan’s former industrial outskirts between
1978 and 1980). Subsequently, he was the only Italian
invited to participate in the Mission Photographique de
la D.A.T.A.R. (Délégation a l’Aménagement du Territoire
et à l’Action Regionale), the most extensive structured
photographic campaign performed in Europe during
the entire twentieth century, which was organised by
the French government from 1983 to 1988. During the
same period, he made Porti di mare (1982-88) and in
1991 his photographic campaign on Beirut.
During the nineteen nineties, Basilico renewed his
research on Italian territory, specifically on the
transformations in the urban landscape, commencing
in Milan with Interrupted City (1996) and continuing in
six different Italian areas with Sezioni del paesaggio
italiano (1996), a project divided in six parallel routes
from one city to another, conceived in collaboration
with Stefano Boeri.
In 1996, the international jury of the VI Mostra
Internazionale di Architettura in the Venice Biennale
awarded him the “Osella d’oro” photography prize in
contemporary architecture.
The subject of the city’s identity between historical
pre-existence and contemporary development,
between destruction and post-war reconstruction,
between urban utopia and forge of the future is well
represented, among others, by his work on the city
of Berlin in 2000, the result of an invitation from the
DAAD (Deutscher Akademischer Austausch Dienst).
In 2000, Basilico was awarded the I.N.U. (Istituto
Nazionale di Urbanistica) Prize for his contribution
to the photographic documentation of contemporary
urban space.
