Bringing together some 130 works, this show proposes an analysis of the artistic career of one of the major figures of 20th century art, Amedeo Modigliani (1884-1920), from the year he arrived in Paris, 1906, until his death. The work of the Italian artist is presented as a direct dialogue with his friends from the Montparnasse colony.
The Caja Madrid Foundation hosts the second part of the show focused on Modigliani's friends from Montparnasse and how they influenced his work.
Bringing together some 130 works, this show proposes an analysis of the artistic career of one of the major figures of 20th century art, Amedeo Modigliani (1884-1920), from the year he arrived in Paris, 1906, until his death.
The great novelty of this ambitious project is that, for the first time, the work of the Italian artist is presented as a direct dialogue with both the masters who influenced his work -Cézanne, Picasso or Brancusi- and his friends from the Montparnasse colony: Marc Chagall, Chaïm Soutine, Moïse Kisling, Ossip Zadkine, Tsuguharu Foujita and Jules Pascin, among others.
The exhibition is structured in two large sections that correspond to the relationship of Modigliani with his masters, which can be seen in the rooms of the Thyssen-Bornemisza Museum, and with his friends, which is shown in the headquarters of the Caja Madrid Foundation.
A year after his arrival in Paris, Modigliani showed seven of his works in the Salon d"Automne of 1907, in the Grand Palais. The grand Parisian retrospectives of the epoch, such as those dedicated to Gauguin (1906) and Cézanne (1907) in the Salon d'Automne, or those dedicated to Toulouse-Lautrec (1908) and, once again, to Cézanne (1910) in the Bernheim-Jeune gallery, were a decisive influence on the artistic development of the young Modigliani. Although he embraced the main trends of the French avant-garde, he also managed to remain outside all of them.
