The Project is pleased to announce an exhibition of video works by Tracey
Rose, Grazia Toderi, and Uri Tzaig.
Tracey Rose is a South African artist exploring issues of body and identity
as they inevitably intersect with politics and race. In the work titled
"TKO," the nude artist spars with a punching bag as four cameras record her
movements. The shifting ghostly images of the artist are punctuated by the
harsh, guttural sounds of her aggressive actions, which provide a
counterpoint to the vulnerability of her naked body. Rose has recently been
included in the 7th Triennale der Klienplastik in Stuttgart, Germany (1998),
and the 2001 Venice Biennale.
Italian artist Grazia Toderi presents a video work featuring New York City's
Yankee and Shea stadiums. In this dual projection, the artist captures an
endlessly protracted moment and focuses on the energy of public mass in a
single space. Toderi was the recipient of the Golden Lion Award at the 1999
Venice Biennale.
Uri Tzaig is an Israeli multi-media artist whose work often revolves around
game playing. By manipulating rules and inventing games, Tzaig seeks to
subvert the traditional notion of competition by emphasizing activity over
winning. His video "Play" features three players and two balls. The only
parameter in the game being that the players react to one another in a
circular manner. The rules become a kind of centralizing force in which the
competitive aspect is removed, replaced by an idea of communal
participation.
