«The iPod generation – sostiene Leadbeater – do not just want to watch and listen wherever they are, increasingly they also want to create and contribute ».

Ecco allora il premuroso ammonimento: «Children may invent imaginary friends for companionship, as part of play, or for other reasons. Treat your child’s “imaginary friend” with respect. This means remembering his name, greeting him when you meet, and setting a place for him at the table».
Awkward, determined, and completely adorable». The new solo show Women and Children by the Canadian group the Royal Art Lodge presents almost two hundred small paintings, each only a few centimetres across. They are painted using a language which brings to mind old comic books and illustrations. In the variety of subjects the theme of dreamy and melancholic wandering emerges in the mind. It continuously recurs, like a bad headache, about two types of human beings- as stated in the title. These are two nebulas of the psyche, as complex and fragile as ever, particularly sensitive to violation, fleeting depositories of a personal secret. They are the lead characters and occupy the centre of the minute scene, accompanied by some immaterial apparition pouring out of the stream of consciousness together with fears and sadness. The show is curated by Guido Bartorelli.

Royal Art Lodge low definition art

I’ve sought to interpret the work of the Royal Art Lodge on previous occasions, but this time I’d like to consider the work of the Canadian group- currently made up of Marcel Dzama, Neil Farber and Michael Dumontier- in the light of a particularly useful element: “Low definition”.
It was obviously a well established notion because Marshall McLuhan, a Canadian scholar, explored all possible aspects of this term-in the way I mean to use it here- when he published the essential Understanding Media in 1964. Low definition is a particular character of the so-called “cold media”, such as comic books and television. Its lexicon is by its nature synthetic, stylised or grainy and the viewer is required to make a substantial effort to complete it, to fill in the gaps. According to McLuhan this is the reason why women’s fishnet stockings are so arousing: they lower the definition of the leg and trigger the creative participation of the male, stimulating his imagination and initiative.

Low definition, with its rough and grainy appearance, is inclusive and inter-dependent. It involves the viewer, making him an active partner in the dialogue, a co-producer. As such it drives towards overcoming the compartmentalisation and hierarchy of competences, the first of these being the clear dividing line that separates user and producer. Low definition stimulates all of us- not just the professional, but also the amateur- to become a part of the production, or rather, considering the entire community of users, to act as a node in the vast network of community inter-connection.
What appears surprising when we read McLuhan is how a reality entering the realm of networks was described looking at radio, newspapers, the incipient diffusion of comic books and television all of which look extremely ancient and high definition when compared to today’s media. All this speaks volumes about McLuhan’s extraordinary ability to predict the leap forward in terms of quality at its early stages. With time, this would experience a spectacular increase- also in terms of quantity- but it was obviously somehow possible to see it emerging in the media of that time.

Without a doubt the modern developments of the internet and low cost technology have brought low definition to the very heart of contemporary discussion, which has been re-vitalised as never before. Wikipedia, YouTube, MySpace, Linux and other such phenomena have given rise to the recent formulation of the theory of the Pro-Am (Professionals-Amateurs) Revolution by the British thinker Charles Leadbeater, who was also a consultant to Tony Blair. His book We Think is yet to be published, but a part is already available on line. In Leadbeater we can certainly perceive a link of some sort with the pioneering statements of McLuhan. According to Leadbeater we are entering the era of participation, where the amateur has as much creative opportunity as the professional thanks to the reduction in cost of technology, which is no longer an exclusive field. Leadbeater states that: “The iPod generation do not just want to watch and listen wherever they are, increasingly they also want to create and contribute”. We should note that it is not by chance that the origin of the spread of the iPod is the MP3 compression format. This format allows a huge amount of music and images to be stored in a pocket-sized device by translating them into low definition, compared to the relatively high definition of television and traditional hi-fi equipment. Whilst the high definition of a video or a piece of music limits the user, overwhelming him and keeping him passive, a low definition video or piece of music encourages the user to try it themselves.

Similarly Wikipedia has revolutionised the traditional form of the encyclopaedia by doing nothing more than offering a platform, a very low definition, modular architecture. It is the community of user-producers, Professional-Amateurs, who bring it into existence, creating the building blocks of the individual subjects according to their own personal interests and competences. In turn these subjects are low definition, in that they are constantly enlarged and revised by other Pro-Am contributors.
I have said all of this in order to show how the Royal Art Lodge have, as always, tackled their work according to the intrinsic logic of low definition, with an approach which tends to look more like that of Pro-Am rather than that of a traditional artist. Although the RAL do not use technology (at least not for the paintings we see here- they have used video in the past), they condense the fundamental characteristics of today’s widespread creativity in their work.

As we know, it is art’s particular role to show the developmental structures of its time. The aspects of contemporary art which appear new,
strange and provocative will- if they are valid- soon reveal themselves to be a wind of change which will sooner or later sweep across us all.
One of the peculiarities of the RAL is the group’s choice of working practice. As well as enjoying highly successful solo careers, Dumontier, Dzama and Farber choose to share a part of their creativity, masking their individual “copyrights” under the curious and high-sounding title of the Royal Art Lodge. Self Serving Secret Society, ironically referencing esoteric groups. We should also remember that whilst the group has attained a degree of stability with just Dumontier, Dzama and Farber as members since 2003, it has seen the participation of many other artists since its founding in 1996. Participating for various periods of time, Jonathan Pylypchuk, Adrian Shalom Williams, Drue and Myles Langlois and Hollie Dzama have all been members.

Even more disorientating is that the RAL’s attitude seems to make the very concept of authorship redundant: not only is there no longer the pretence of a high definition recognition of the individual, but there is also an erosion of the idea that art- made individually or in groups- is an exclusive practice, a high definition action which distinguishes itself from the omnipresent rumble of mass creativity. Dumontier, Dzama and Farber are three highly skilled professionals, trained at the School of Art at Manitoba University, but they have wanted, and have been able, to re-invent their artistic practice in ways which are typical of Pro-Am. The RAL sessions take place in a friendly and relaxed atmosphere, even though they may address disturbing subject matters or involve long discussions on what to include in a painting. Even their work place is an eloquent choice: for example the series Women and Children was made on Farber’s dining room table.

Dsaydreaming shapes the RAL’s practice. They fill tiny paintings, just a few centimetres across, with a compendium-like language which calls to mind old comics or illustrations, but also childhood drawings. Looking at such material one might complain that there is a lack of commitment, a refusal to follow their intuitions to their conclusion, not taking them beyond the sketch stage. But this is what dilettantes do, those who do not want to take on the responsibility for completing a large, well finished artwork. I am convinced that this aspect should not be criticised but rather turned around and seen as a virtue. Completing an artwork means closing it in on itself, in its own high definition, leaving the user with nothing more than a passive contemplation. The small products of the RAL hold a great fascination for the viewer, because he does not simply observe them, but at some level he completes them.

We also see this in the appropriation of the language of mass-media images, which are expressed in a highly personal kind of slang, or rather an idiolect. The most evident aspect is the stripping away of the gloss and polish of the mass-media, from which fragile and wrinkled figures emerge, subtly stripped of their grammar. From Lichtenstein to Murakami, we have got used to the super-polished, gigantic trophies of pop in contemporary art. The RAL calls on us to participate with slightly blurred miniatures.

If the viewer were not somehow completing these works, they would not become so full of humour. Humour transfers the finishing of the work to the conceptual processes of the viewer. In the RAL’s work the humour derives from the association between the image and the writing which almost always accompanies it. The images show situations which are without meaning because they are either insignificant because they are far too banal or because they are incomprehensible because the banality is mixed with incongruous fantastic presences. The writing, which belongs to another conceptual sphere, and which is understood by the viewer in a different way to the images, operates to make “sense” of them, in a way which is somewhere between ironic and moving. It is a wise voice which informs us that this “sense” is its sheer nonsense, a tragic-comic joke about the mystery of life and its underhand subjugation.

Thus we come to consider the theme which the RAL have been working on for some time: the dreamy and melancholic wandering in the mind which continuously recurs, like a bad headache, about two types of human beings- as stated in the title- women and children. They are not high definition identities, but two nebulas of the psyche as complex and fragile as ever, particularly sensitive to violation, fleeting depositories of a personal secret. They are the lead characters and occupy the centre of the minute scene, accompanied by some everyday objects. However these seem odd, not real, but like an immaterial apparition pouring out of the stream of consciousness together with fears and sadness. The chair is a shield behind which a child can curl up and hide, elsewhere it magically brings with it the presence of grandpa, who used to sit there.

A cardboard box becomes a room where a little girl can hide herself and cry. Our shadow is a grim bogeyman, which creeps along behind us, and who knows if he will disappear when we find the courage to turn round. On the other hand the appearance of the fantastic creature does not only embody menace, but also the desire for comfort. Thus the caring warning: «Children may invent imaginary friends for companionship, as part of play, or for other reasons. Treat your child’s “imaginary friend” with respect. This means remembering his name, greeting him when you meet, and setting a place for him at the table».
In the same way the woman emerges herself in introspection and painful imagining. just like a child, or rather like a “newborn kitten. Awkward, determined, and completely adorable”. A window deep within can magically open for a housewife who is kneading dough, then one can see a mysterious ghostly shape outlined on the flour. Guido Bartorelli
