comunicato stampa

Hudson Franklin is pleased to announce a solo exhibition by Jeremy Boyle, on view from March 20 to April 26, 2008. Boyle's new work in various media -- video, drawing, sculpture, and sound -- explores the theme of circulation through pattern and repetition, sometimes literally and other times conceptually.

The exhibition will include a wall-size, site-specific drawing made with Boyle's large spirograph machine. Built out of clear acrylic (or Acrylite), it allows him a multitude of circular patterns adaptable to nearly any wall (a previous wooden version made router-cut patterns in birch). By displaying both the machine and the drawing created with it, he continues a practice of including the viewer in the "how" as well as the "what" of his art.

Four new video works will be exhibited, including a one-channel projection of the artist's head that rotates on a 360-degree screen hanging above the viewer. Inserting himself into this video and another that literally revolves around an image of his whole body, Boyle reminds us that he is part of a circuitry that includes the artworks, exhibition spaces, and viewers.

Also on view will be the latest version of Boyle's (self-playing) guitar. Midi-controlled pneumatics allow him to remove himself as a musician but insert himself as the composer/inventor. Boyle's compositions often circle back upon themselves and are programmed to loop automatically. Leaving a multitude of circuits out in the open, the artist offers the viewer the ability to experience mechanical, sculptural, and aural beauty.
