On the one year anniversary of the fire which destroyed the Kendall Center
for the Arts, Randolph Associates Fine Arts extended an invitation to the
Kendall Center artists to participate in a salon show. This exhibit would
give the KCA artists a chance to reunite through their work and to reflect on
the past year since this community's loss. Twenty-seven of the thirty-five
have submitted a piece of their own choice, to be shown in the "Salon des
Independent" format.
The KCA fire still permeates in the artists' comments and discussions, it has
produced two distinct reactions in pursuit of their work. Most KCA artists
regarded this painful experience as a catalyst for reflection and growth,
choosing to focus on the continutation of work initiated prior to the fire.
The second group, a handful of the KCA artists, felt a strong need to address
their sense of lost time. Ellen Wineberg's series After the Fire shows
fragmentation and renewal by grafting plant drawings and newsprint onto a
collage while Linda Peterson-Pollen's somber watercolor Shadows of Time
renders a pile of discarded tag sale watches. Art therapist and instructor
Sheri Gillette Espar offers a visceral, yet hopeful mixed media work titled
Phoenix Rising as "...a prayer for renewed community spirit coming together
to celebrate the arts..."
As this is an art community effort, Randolph Associates Fine Arts would like
to acknowledge the cooperation of the following: Kelly Barrette Fine Art of
Boston; Art Resources, St. Paul MN; Art Quilt Forum of St. Louis, MO; and
finally the efforts of former KCA administrator Inez Keller in tracking and
informing the KCA artists.
