As the great master of traditional Chinese painting, Zhu Qizhan is one of the progenitors of modern art education in China. Born in Liu River of Taicang, Jiangsu Province, May 27, 1892, Mr. Zhu was once a teacher in Shanghai College of Fine Arts and Shanghai Xinhua Private Art School successively, when he was young. After the founding of the People’s Republic of China, he became the first-class artist in Shanghai Academy of Chinese Painting, the honorary professor of East China Normal University, and the honorary professor of Fine Arts Department of Shanghai University. He also worked as the standing secretary of Shanghai Artist Association, the consultant of China Artist Association, the consultant of Xiling Press etc. Widely acclaimed for his superb skills and moral integrity, Zhu’s paintings blend ancient and modern, east and west styles. He is good at painting mountains and water, flowers and fruit. His unique style is characterized by freshness and simple, with great momentum and elegance. Since 1950s, he has successively held more than ten personal exhibitions in Shanghai, Nanjing, Beijing, Hongkong, Singapore etc. He participated in the France Spring Art Saloon in 1962, completed the huge Grape as invited by the San Francisco municipal government for its newly-built international airport in 1983, and went to the United States to give lectures on invitation in 1986.
In 1995, the British Museum held the exhibition “Modern Chinese Painting—Art of Zhu Qizhan” for him, and collected his Album of Flower & Plant Paintings. Before that, the British Museum had held such an exhibition only once for the living artists. At the invitation of the Asian Art Museum of San Francisco, he headed for the United States to hold his personal exhibition in July of the same year. Zhu Qizhan, one of the few over-100-year-old artists still keeping painting, won the first Shanghai Outstanding Contribution Award to Literature and Art. When he was 100 and 105, he held the“Exhibition of Zhu Qizhan’s Paintings for His 100th Birthday” and the “Exhibition of Zhu Qizhan’s Paintings for His 105th Birthday” respectively.
The current exhibition will display a large number of photographs and videos collected tirelessly by Zhu Qizhan Art Museum, thanks to the strong support of Shanghai Political Consultative Committee, Beijing National Painting Institute, Shanghai Museum, Shanghai Art Museum, Shanghai Art Association, and Shanghai Academy of Chinese Painting, as well as the assistance of friends from home and abroad.
This exhibition focuses on Mr. Zhu’s art career in his later years, for his photos of his earlier years and middle-aged period has lost in the past one hundred years, a history of hardships and difficulties. Around 200 important pictures will be on display in this exhibition, with videos of his life of art. All these try to show a real whole life of Mr. Zhu Qizhan.
Zhu Qizhan experienced a life of several centuries and a long and tortuous art career, which has a close relation with the development of Shanghai’s history and culture. Also, it epitomizes the history of China’s modern art. Therefore, videos and photos of Mr. Zhu Qizhan are of great value to both history and art, which will arouse concern among all friends in art circle and in society.
