School of Visual Arts (SVA) presents “Unseen Realities,” a sculpture and photography exhibition by SVA students and recent alumni that plays with the concepts of and intersection between fantasy and reality. Curated by Richard Brooks, assistant director of student galleries, the artists include Cynthia Bittenfield, Nathan Freise, Lynn Herring and Tina Schula.

Cynthia Bittenfield presents photographs from her series “World War II Revisited.” Using her father’s photo scrapbook as source material, the artist juxtaposes his innocent wartime images and captions with her own photographs of Normandy depicting the remnants and devastation of the war. Bittenfield is a current student in the MFA Photography, Video and Related Media Department.

Nathan Freise’s series of inkjet prints depict experimental architecture projects. His hybrid illustrations combine multiple forms of media--ink, graphite, photography and marker--with computer graphics. Freise’s representations of utopian worlds question our current conditions of suburban sprawl and urban master-planning. Freise is a current student in the MFA Computer Art Department.

In her video sculptures Lynn Herring uses photographs of the human figure on sliced open boxes mounted with video monitors and mirrors to examine the psychological realm. In describing her work, Herring states: “When looking inside the split figure we see multiple facets of the same video image repeatedly reflecting back at itself along with the continued reflection of our self. The mirrors show that while looking within another, we still see the reflection of ourselves.” Herring is a recent graduate of the BFA Fine Arts Department.

Drawing on her experience as a filmmaker, Tina Schula photographs cinematic tableaus staged within deserted landscapes. Cast in an apocalyptic mood, the artist’s work explores the still image’s potential for dramatic expression and capacity for non-dramatic off-screen experience. Schula is a current student in the MFA Photography, Video and Related Media Department
