23rd International Biennial of Graphic Design

Different venues, Brno

The 23rd year is dedicated to graphic design, illustration and type in books, magazines, newspapers and the digital media. Its centrepiece remains the competition show for professional graphic designers. This year it was entered by almost 400 artists with over 1600 exhibits. Over 600 specimens by 162 artists from 27 countries were short-listed. Designers from the Czech Republic, Japan and Germany have traditionally shown the greatest interest in the Biennial competition show.

The International Biennial of Graphic Design Brno is the largest and most prestigious project undertaken by the Moravian Gallery in Brno. Established in 1963, it is the oldest graphic design event of its kind in the world. The primary organisers of the Biennial are the Ministry of Culture of the Czech Republic and the Moravian Gallery. Two subjects regularly alternate at the Biennial. The 23rd year is dedicated to graphic design, illustration and typography in books, magazines, newspapers and digital media. In two years, the Biennial will focus on poster design, corporate identity, information and advertising graphics.

Over the years of its existence, the Brno Biennial has branched extensively to involve a number of activities. Its centrepiece, however, remains the competition show for professional graphic designers. This year it was entered by almost 400 artists with over 1600 exhibits. Over 600 specimens by 162 artists from 27 countries were short-listed. Designers from the Czech Republic, Japan and Germany have traditionally shown the greatest interest in the Biennial competition show. A complete list of artists whose works aspire to the Grand Prix of the Brno Biennial 2008 is available on the Moravian Gallery website. The list of artists is accompanied by assorted samples of their output.

The work of the selection jury will form a base for the international jury, which consists of acknowledged graphic design theorists and artists from all over the world. The international jury will meet two days before the opening of the Biennial and award Grand Prix, as well as the Main Prize to the best pieces in five competition categories and further awards. The results will be announced on the opening day of the Brno Biennial 2008, 17 June 2008. After the Biennial, the works on display will become part of the graphic design collection of the Moravian Gallery in Brno.

Another pivotal event, apart from the competition show, is a specialist symposium, this year held under the title Graphic Design Next. It is scheduled for 18 and 19 June 2008 and will take place in the Reduta Theatre. Alongside members of the international jury, a number of leading graphic designers from all over the globe will contribute to the event. The symposium is traditionally a platform for discussion on topical issues in graphic design and provides immediate contact with design celebrities. The main partner to the symposium is Eye, a prestigious British design journal.

The third cornerstone of the Biennial is a profile exhibition, created by a distinguished foreign artist. This year’s exhibition was prepared under the curatorship of Abbott Miller, graphic designer and theorist, one of the owners of the Pentagram design studio, New York and editor of the 2wice journal. A member of last year’s international jury, he decided to return to Brno and help lend shape to the Biennial, which bears witness to both the appeal and significance of the show and to the potential of Brno as a city to which visitors from abroad keep returning. Abbott Miller’s exhibition will be presented at the Moravian Gallery under the title “Brno Echo: Ornament and Crime from Adolf Loos to Now”, and is inspired by the concentric lines of the Brno Biennial logo.

These three events will be supplemented by seven accompanying exhibitions. The “Works from…” series will introduce Slovenia; “Personalities in Czech Graphic Design” will present the art of Jiří Rathouský, there will be a show of the work of Fumio Tachibana, a major Japanese graphic designer and winner of Grand Prix of the Brno Biennial 2004, as well as works by students from the Department of Visual Communication at the College of Visual Art, Bratislava, street art and graffiti. For four months, Brno will become a centre of the contemporary world’s graphic design.

The visual identity of the Brno Biennial is commissioned to a designer selected by the organisation committee among the competition entrants. This year, Petr Štěpán from Studio Najbrt will be responsible for the visual identity of the event, with Radim Babák and Ondřej Tobola (Hippos Design) collaborating on the installation design.
