German photographer Herbert List (1903-1975) is one of the greatest artists in the history of twentieth-century photography. List's refined combination of a humanist approach and a Magic Realism aesthetic lend his photos an aura of mystery, an almost metaphysical quality. According to List, photography is "vision made visible".
German photographer Herbert List (1903-1975) is one of the greatest artists in
the history of twentieth-century photography. List's refined combination of a
humanist approach and a Magic Realism aesthetic lend his photos an aura of
mystery, an almost metaphysical quality. According to List, photography is
"vision made visible". On trips to Greece and Italy, he photographed
landscapes, ruins and young men that evoke ancient Greece.
His portraits of his
artist friends - Picasso, Colette, Pasolini and Stravinsky - reveal a remarkable
psychological finesse, and his photo essays of Italian street scenes, tinged with
irony, are world-renowned. This exhibition of 228 prints is the first time that
List's different genres - from intimist scenes to photojournalism -have been
presented together.
This exhibition is organized and circulated by the Foto
Museum, Munich.
