Depot (Abrasion and Acceleration II)
Galerie Kapinos is pleased to announce Christian Hoischen's second
solo exhibition with the gallery and would like to invite you to a
reception for the artist on Friday, 1st February 2002, from 7pm -
9pm.
After Hoischen's sculpture of an oversized racing car - 'Abrieb und
Beschleunigung' ('Abrasion and Acceleration') - attracted
considerable attention, he now presents a sequel in the form of a
4 x 5 m swimming pool jammed into the exhibition space.
In Christian Hoischen's sculpture 'Depot' the normally positive
image of a swimming pool as a sign of prosperity, a life of luxury,
the joy of living, sex and parties, becomes a complex, multivalent
object: a drainhole in the ground oozes into the antiseptic blue of
the painted basin. This dark hole, full of mud and sludge,
overshadows the superficial cheerfulness with its sinister
symbolism and corrupts the dream of a swimming pool into a
nightmare.
The context surrounding this situation remains unclear. We are kept
in the dark about its story. Hoischen has constructed a
conspiratorial vault - laced with an essence distilled from
psychological abysses.
As in the films of David Lynch, it appears that behind this
erotically charged image, there is a latent danger that one will
not be able to resist a place of horror and threat. Or, as Hoischen
himself poses the question: 'Is this a representation of a fatal
semantic attraction that has as its disillusioning consequences,
dug its own grave?'
Opening reception for the artist: Friday 1st February, 2002 from
7pm - 9 pm
Tue - Sat 1pm - 7 pm
