Martin Puryear is recognized as one of the
foremost sculptors working in the United
States today. In fact, he was recently named
America’s Best Artist by Time magazine. His
powerful pieces, made primarily of wood,
metal, or wire mesh and tar, are noted for
their exquisite craftsmanship, their unusual
beauty, and their rich symbolism.
Meticulously crafted by hand, Puryear’s
abstract works suggest a range of organic and
animal forms, as well as artifacts such as
vessels, nets, and tools. Puryear is
African-American, and a rich diversity of
cultures informs his visual vocabulary. Native
American, African, Scandinavian, Japanese,
and Arctic cultures are among those he
references in his work.
The exhibition presents nine of Puryear’s
sculptures, including the Art Center’s In
Sheep’s Clothing, representing the best of
his creative achievement during the past
decade. In addition, it features pieces drawn
from prominent public and private
collections, including recently completed
works from the artist’s studio that will be
exhibited for the first time.
Martin Puryear has been organized by the
Virginia Museum of Fine Arts. A major grant
has been provided by The National
Endowment for the Arts.
