Cinema attitudes
Tobias Putrih's artistic activity is mainly developed through sculptures that can take, at times, architectural dimensions and functions. Inspired by visionary architects, he re-explores the work of people such as Buckminster Fuller or Friedrich Kiesler. Since 2001, his research has focussed on the space of cinema projection : "My interest in cinema architecture is based on the view that the mecanism of cinema with its projection, auditorium and audience is an almost perfect center - the black hole of architecture, cinema and the visual arts. The décor of the movie theatre (…) is that space in-between, where metaphorically speaking, an object is created: between the reality of the street and the imaginary of the projection. The cinema auditorium is an almost overlooked place of transition."(from Tobias Putrih 99-07, ed. gurgur editions, jrp/ringier, Neuberger Museum of Art, 2007) In 2007, he designed the Slovenian pavilion for the Venice Biennale as an open-air movie-theatre /structure, inspired by John Eberson's atmospheric cinemas of the 1920s.
We were fascinated by his project, and invited Tobias Putrih to design a new project for attitudes. His cinéma attitudes is an organic-looking structure of wood facets, occupying the whole exhibition room. For this "archi-sculpture", we conceived a programme of films and documentaries where architecture has a privileged place. We also gave carte blanche to three Genevan cultural associations : the Maison de l'architecture, the Maison de la littérature and the Association pour la danse contemporaine.
As we shall take over the direction of the Swiss Cultural Centre in Paris from the 1st of October 2008, this production will be attitudes' last exhibition at rue du Beulet in Geneva. Our activities will continue as extra-muros projects and publications.
