Audiello Fine Art, Inc. is pleased to announce Effects, a group
exhibitionfeaturing Adam Ames, Bryan Crockett, John Espinosa, Luis
Gispert and Julian LaVerdiere. The exhibition will open on Friday, April
28 and will run through June 3, 2000.
Fire, explosion, blood and guts, special effects allow modern man to
indulge his age old desire to put himself in harms way, without being
singed. Via these dramas of grand illusion our mind is able to
experience what our bodies cannot. Traveling through blue-screen
landscapes of the future and into the minds of spies and super-heroes
we realize the shortcomings of our own flesh. While under the spell of
special effects we are made to feel superior and weak with out it's
powerful mirage, keeping us coming back for more and that's
entertainment.
Adam Ames uses horror movies and their language of human
mutilation as a way of deconstructing masculine perfection and social
expectation. Like a mask he strips away his physicality, revealing
much more than just the visceral.
Bryan Crockett creates creatures like something that might be hiding
under a child's bed in a Steven King movie but are really more of
schematic props, illustrating in human scale our own fears and
desires.
John Espinosa grew up around the sur-reality of Disneyland, Florida
where illusion is a way of life and disaster is always safely staged.
Enticed by smoke clouds and fire from theatrical explosions he
illuminates them like stained-glass windows to acknowledge our
reverence for such artificial spectacles.
Luis Gispert, inspired by the imagery of athletic and action heroes
finds a way of creating a dialogue about the thin line between sport and
violence, action-reality and action-fantasy. Even wooed by the sound of
"action" he uses the massive beats and bass of hip-hop in a THX style
to create a truly personal theater/arena.
Julian LaVerdiere conjures the past to cast a reflection of the future.
With skillfully rendered props our belief in the objects authenticity as
an antique is tested as is our faith in history. Begging the question, is
the treasure of science and knowledge always a gift in the right hands?
