Fibreworks 08 celebrates the twelfth anniversary of Cambridge Galleries
juried biennial exhibition of contemporary Canadian fibre art.
Inaugurated in 1986 to complement the important historical role that
textile manufacturing has played throughout the history of the City of
Cambridge, the exhibition has also played a critical role in the growth
and development of the galleries' permanent collection of contemporary
Canadian fibre art.
This year our esteemed jurors J. Lynn Campbell, Melanie Egan and Chris
Mitchell had the daunting task of having to select from over 180 artist
submissions from across Canada. Over the course of the multi-day
process the jurors narrowed down their selection to 35 artworks by 32
artists from coast-to-coast.
Janet Morton: Toque
Guelph-based artist Janet Morton has a reputation for making large scale
textile installations; including house-sized tea cozies and protective
wraps for trees. The artist has been invited to debut a new piece for
Cambridge Galleries; a 4 meter diameter hand-woven toque suspended in
the atrium at Queen's Square. Appropriately timed to coincide with
Fibreworks 08, Morton's grand gesture conflates this common piece of
Canadian winter wear into a gargantuan folly.
Janet Morton has been exhibiting her textile-based artwork both
nationally and internationally since 1992, and has received numerous
awards for her work. She has produced a number of ambitious outdoor and
indoor textile installations, including Femmebomb as part of Toronto's
Nuit Blanche 2007, and a recent installation Better Homes and Gardens at
the Kitchener-Waterloo Art Gallery. She is represented by Paul Petro
Contemporary Art in Toronto and her work can be found on-line at the
Canadian Centre for Contemporary Art website <http://www.ccca.ca>. She lives in
Guelph, Ontario.
