programming. Prominent guest speakers and special project presentations offer an open
dialogue for the exchange of ideas and opinions on contemporary art. The cultural program for
Art Toronto 2008 includes:
NEW:
• Invisible Cities - Curator Micaela Giovannotti, who lives in New York and works
globally has created a major video exhibition entitled ‘Invisible Cities’ based on the
acclaimed 1972 book by Italian novelist Italo Calvino which follows the journeys of a
young Marco Polo. She has assembled a selection of videos by international artists into
three projections, exploring current urban societies in a global community.
• An additional special project is the return of the young and dynamic curatorial team of
No. 9 who will again present a dynamic interactive rest space where environmental
“green” No. 9 believes contemporary art can help raise environmental issues awareness.
Along with fellow artists with similar convictions, they produce ambitious projects in
public spaces. The TIAF installation will investigate the intersection of art and ecologies.
Two new exhibitions this year include Arts Open and the RBC Canadian Painting
Competition. Arts Open offers support for inner-city grassroots arts organizations providing
educational programs through a collaborative Artist Mentorship Program giving children the
opportunity to work with some of Canada’s most respected artists including Ed Burtynsky and
John Hartman. Arts Open will be exhibiting select works of some of the children involved in the
organization.
The RBC Canadian Painting Competition, established in 1999 with the support of the Canadian
Art Foundation is a unique initiative in support of Canada’s emerging professional artists.
Works by young artists from Western, Eastern and Central Canada are selected each year by a
jury panel of distinguished members of the arts community. A selection of the winner’s works
will be on exhibit at TIAF.
RETURNING:

section focuses on 15 emerging national and international artists. An array of their
works has been chosen by 15 young and contemporary art galleries. All art featured in
Young Avant-Garde is priced under $5,000.00.
• The News at Five – Visitors have the opportunity each day at 5:00 p.m. to observe a
rotating exhibition series entitled “On Painting: History, Surprise, Restraint.” Curated by
Canadian Art Senior Editor Richard Rhodes, this show features paintings that serve as
examples of contemporary art’s reconnection with art history.

Talks unite influential national and international critics and curators in a lecture
discussion setting. Topics include current projects and ideas as well as opinions and
insight on the current world-wide contemporary art scene and challenges faced by some
of the world’s leading visual arts institutions. (Admission to all lectures included with

• T at Three: Presented in partnership with Border Crossings magazine, T at Three takes
place Saturday and Sunday at 3:00 p.m. Robert Enright, Senior Contributing Editor of

to provide insight and perspective on both the creative process and meaning of the art
being featured at TIAF.
The extensive exhibition of Canadian and international art works, combined with a full roster of
distinguished cultural programming makes TIAF a visual feast for art aficionados and amateur
art lovers alike. The quantity of unique and distinct artwork and the superb quality of all the art
on display at TIAF make the fair a dynamic environment in which to purchase art and also offers
several unique and interactive learning opportunities. The Fair has something for all tastes,
backgrounds and budgets with pieces ranging from $500 to $3 million.
Also returning this year is the TIAF ART SMART collector Button. Produced by TIAF in
partnership with the Drake Hotel and designed by local artist Ms. Kelly Mark, the buttons will be
distributed during Nuit Blanche. The ART SMART Buttons are a limited production of only
