Van Hoffs and Frankel

Florence Lynch Gallery, New York

Florence Lynch Gallery is pleased to present an exhibition of paintings by German artist, Katharina Van Hoffs: for her first New York solo show, Chercher L'homme, the artist presents a series of recent paintings, with the recurring use of female imagery in a technique that seems like straightforward portraiture. Also on February 14, Florence Lynch Gallery presents A Site-Specific Installations, 1998-2000, a catalogue featuring images from the summer installation series. To commemorate the event, Niel Frankel will present a site-specific work.

Site Project

Florence Lynch Gallery is pleased to present an exhibition of paintings by German artist, Katharina Van Hoffs and a project by Niel Frankel. The exhibition is on view from February 14 to March 16, 2002.

For her first New York solo show Katharina Van Hoffs presents a series of recent paintings, with the recurring use of female imagery in a technique that seems like straightforward portraiture. Further investigation reveals that Van Hoffs take the work beyond the obvious into a much darker arena which metaphorically deals with anxiety, voyeurism, and the unknown. The artist's fascination with the works of Jean-Luc Goddard and David Lynch is also revealed through the visual rendering of her characters. The composition of her portraits, in their complexity, much like a Lynch or Goddard character, reveal as much as they conceal; The real meaning of the works remains open ended as they lead the viewer into a world beyond the space which they occupy.

Cinema and literature effectively are the common links for Van Hoffs' characters. It is this ongoing interest in literary cinematography which leads her to aptly title the show Chercher L'homme. Search for the man. The title makes one wonder: who is it that's doing the searching-the characters or the artist?

Katharina Van Hoffs was born in Krefeld, Germany. She currently lives and works in Cologne, Germany. She exhibited extensively in Germany, Belgium, Italy and The Netherlands. Her most recent exhibitions were in Gallery Klein, bad Münstereifel, Germany and in Gallery Toselli, Milan, Italy.

Also on February 14, Florence Lynch Gallery presents A Site-Specific Installations, 1998-2000, a catalogue featuring images from the summer installation series by Gabriele Stellbaum, Elana Herzog, Luisa Caldwell, Elena Berriolo, Rebecca Smith, Niel Frankel, Lisa Hein and Bob Seng, Susan Chorpenning, Matt Freedman, Janet Echelman, Linda Herritt, and Howard Gross. To commemorate the event, Niel Frankel will present a site-specific work to be on view concurrently with the Katharina Van Hoffs exhibition.

An opening reception will be held at the gallery on Thursday, February 14, from 6:00 to 9:00 p.m.

Gallery hours are Wednesday through Saturday from 11:00 to 6:00 p.m.
