Annya Sand

Lasciato il nativo Kazakhstan a soli 14 anni, il talento artistico di Annya Sand è stato incoraggiato e nutrito soprattutto dal padre e dal nonno, già affermati nell’ambito della gioielleria e dell’architettura, ma anche suoi effettivi “insegnanti” per la pittura.

Annya Sand ha ottenuto un grande successo di critica per la mostra presso Harvey Nichols, svoltasi a Londra nel 2006, ma anche durante mostre in gallerie del West End e al Chelsea Harbour Club. Sentendola parlare dei suoi artisti preferiti, è facile concludere che spesso un’artista autodidatta può essere influenzata dalle carriere giovani artisti della YBA (Young British Artists) o dalla Pop Art, considerate estremamente affascinanti e innovative. Annya Sand, comunque, non si ispira direttamente a loro, ma cerca di unire il suo talento e la creatività alla conoscenza dei classici – Michelangelo, Matisse, Monet e Segal per nominarne solo alcuni.

Se può essere considerato prematuro lodare molto il lavoro di Annya, non dovremmo dimenticarci di valutare i suoi meriti artistici. Nonostante si tratti di opere astratte, c’è sempre una struttura basata su principi precisi e sull’attenzione al dettaglio. Le tele sembrano arazzi dai toni terrosi e carnosi, intessuti di intramezzi di colore intenso, un marchio di fabbrica che è già riconoscibile tra i suoi lavori, nonostante la sua carriera sia appena all’inizio.

“Creo spessi strati di impasto nelle mie pitture - spiega Annya – per cercare di lasciare nella texture abbastanza luce. Mi piace utilizzare i colori a strati, lasciando che anche quelli dati alla base riescano sempre a fuoriuscire.”

Lo stile di Annya è stato anche influenzato dalla sua terra natia, il Kazakhstan, soprattutto in termini di colore, utilizzato a rilievo, come è ben visibile sulle tele. Annya ha portato una fresca conoscenza della pittura astratta di paesaggio contemporanea, conferendo alle tele una forte drammaticità, attraverso l’uso della luce e delle pennellate. Guardando le sue opere si ha la sensazione di trovarsi “dentro un paesaggio” e di riconoscere quelle forze invisibili che danno ad un luogo un’atmosfera di mistero e di forza. Dipinti come “Deep” e “Reflection” mostrano chiaramente il tipo di rapporto che Annya ha con i colori, grazie all’effetto esplosivo delle pennellate sulla tela. Nel suo lavoro è possibile percepire la magia mistica che risiede oltre la pittura, quella qualità effimera che conferisce la vera armomia.

Moving from her native Kazakhstan when she was just 14 years old, Annya Sand’s artistic talent was encouraged and nurtured by her father and grandfather whose artistic talents were more pragmatically engaged in jewellery design and architecture. Nonetheless, it was her father who taught her.

Annya Sand has gained much critical acclaim from an exhibition staged at Harvey Nichols, in London 2006, and also from shows in West End galleries and the Chelsea Harbour Club. It is also refreshing when listening to her discussing her favourite artists, the conclusion that one would jump to, was that a self taught young artist may be influenced by the perceived sexy and fashionable careers of the YBA’s and Pop artists. Annya Sand, however, does not view these artists as inspiration; instead she channels her fledgling talent from the classicists – Michelangelo, Matisse, Monet and Segal to name a few.

Whilst heaping praise on such a young artist can be interpreted as premature, one should not forget to assess the work based on its artistic merit. Although her work is described as abstract, it is work that is constructed on very sound principles and attention to detail. Her work is a tapestry of earthy fleshy tones, interwoven with shocks of intense colour, a trademark of her body of work from her short career to date.

“I create thick impasto layers in my paintings” Annya explains “yet try to keep the textures quite light. I like using colours in layers, allowing the base colours to come through”

Annya’s work has been influenced by her native Kazakhstan, in terms of colour and some of the intense jewel like mounds that appear on the canvas. She brings a fresh insight into contemporary abstract landscape paintings, giving an expressive elemental drama to the canvas through the use of light and layers. Her artwork creates feelings of “being within the landscape” and recognises the invisible forces that give a place a mysterious and powerful atmosphere. Paintings such a “Deep” and “ Reflection” give a clear understanding of Annya’s relationship with colour an its implosive effect on the canvas. One senses the mystical magic that lie’s beneath, there is an ephemeral quality about her work that is truly harmonious.
