Sentirsi a proprio agio nella propria pelle, con se stessi come con gli altri. Oggi più di ieri il tema dell’identità femminile è in primo piano a livello mondiale: donne che diventano presidenti di nazioni importanti (Merkel, Gandhi, Kirchner) o che fanno scandalo come nuove e vecchie mogli (Bruni, Sarkozy), donne che per una causa politica rinunciano alla loro vita (Bhuto), donne che sacrificano la loro libertà pur di combattere il terrore (Betancourt e Aung San Suu Kyi). E tantissime donne che nella vita quotidiana, in famiglia e nel lavoro, combattono piccole e grandi problemi. Essere e sentirsi donna ieri, oggi, domani. Donne in posa con veletta, o in movimento. Tante figure diverse, tanti modi di presentarsi nel tempo, ma anche tanti viaggi nel conscio e nell’inconscio. E' sempre un punto interrogativo per una donna presentarsi alla collettività per necessaria e imprescindibile necessità di sentire che la propria libertà non può essere negata, anche se sappiamo che oggi è più facile di ieri.

Tutte le opere esposte in AS YOU WANT ME - Come tu mi vuoi - hanno in comune foto antiche che rappresentano donne del passato in varie età: da bambine, da giovani fanciulle, da donne sposate e da femme fatal. Le fotografie di stoffe che intervallano o che sono abbinate a questi ritratti rappresentano il mondo contemporaneo, ciò che si indossa oggi con piacere per giocare o per sedurre. Un modo per sentirsi vicino a queste donne che hanno profondamente segnato la vita di tante altre venute dopo, con la loro presenza e le loro decisioni. Un filo che lega tutte le donne del mondo, come quello di un abito, indissolubile anche dopo secoli di storia.

Stefania Pignatelli vive e lavora a Castel di Lama, in provincia di Ascoli Piceno, in Italia. Le sue opere sono state esposte a livello internazionale. E’ responsabile dell’Associazione Culturale Seghetti Panichi che cura ogni anno mostre di arte contemporanea nelle Dimore Storiche della regione Marche.
La mostra “AS YOU WANT ME” è uno degli eventi organizzati dall’Istituto Italiano di Cultura e dalla Comunità Europea.

La mostra sarà inaugurata dall’Ambasciatore Italiano a Londra Giancarlo Aragona e introdotta da Marisa Vescovo, storica e critico d’arte contemporanea.

Feeling good about yourself, whether alone or in the company of others. Today more than ever the theme of female identity takes pride of place all over the world: there are women who have become presidents of major nations (Merkel, Gandhi, and Kirchner) or caused a scandal as new or old wives (Bruni, Sarkozy), women who have relinquished a life of their own for a political cause (Bhuto), and those who have sacrificed their own freedom to fight against terror (Betancourt and Aung San Suu Kyi). And so many more women who struggle with small and not so small problems in daily life, in the family and at work.

All the works on display in AS YOU WANT ME have in common vintage photographs showing women of the past at various ages: as infants, young girls, married women and femmes fatales. The photographs of fabrics which are interspersed or coupled with these portraits represent the contemporary world – what is willingly worn today for leisure or seduction. A way of feeling ourselves close to these women who, with their presence and their decisions, have made such a profound impression on the life of so many others to come. A thread connecting all the women of the world, like that of a dress, indissoluble even after the passing of centuries.

Stefania Pignatelli lives and works in Ascoli Piceno, in Italy, and her works have been exhibited internationally. She studied at the Central Saint Martins’ College of Art and Design in London, currently works as an art therapist, and is director of the Seghetti Panichi Cultural Association which every year organises exhibitions of contemporary art in the historic residences of Italy’s Le Marche Region.
The exhibition, AS YOU WANT ME is one of the events organised by the The Italian Cultural Institute and the European Commission.
