LFL Gallery is pleased to announce the first New York solo exhibition of Rob Nadeau.
Rob Nadeau's paintings and installations are
constructed of both prefabricated and improvisational
markings, poured in different consistencies and
transparencies of paint. As objects, these forms
present a handmade catalog of unique parts and
processes, referencing the vast labyrinths of
information offered up by the web, or products culled
from the inventories of today's mega-stores. Produced
independently of the canvas and later applied to
surfaces of sprayed acrylic, the markings act like
Colorforms or elements of appliqué, imparting a sense
of freedom to the architectural structures they
overlay.
Nadeau constructs his canvases layer by layer, echoing
old master techniques, while the abstracted, sometimes
accidental markings laid over the top belie the
intervention of digital technology and computer
graphics. Bold, gestural passages of high-gloss color
collide with and inform one another, in contrast to
the hard-edged, matte surfaces underneath. He works
from real and imagined imagery - deriving inspiration
from digital and actual architecture, as well as
various forms of mapping and design. Nadeau’s work
examines the discourse between the hand and the
computer, by offering many possibilities of
construction and reversibility in the underlying
structure, while ultimately allowing a sense of play
to dominate the final outcome.
Born in 1974, Nadeau studied at Brown University and
received a MFA from RISD. He has exhibited in various
venues in the US and Europe including solo exhibitions
earlier this year in Provincetown, MA; Hamburg,
Germany; and Paris. Nadeau has won numerous awards
and grants including a Joan Mitchell Foundation Grant
in 1999, and a residency at the Fine Arts Work Center
in Provincetown, MA. He currently lives and works in
Brooklyn, New York.
