comunicato stampa

A pendant is a simple idea. Hang something from a cord and you have one. For contemporary jewelers, however, creating a suspended form provides endless design possibilities and challenges. The Pendant Show based on 500 Pendants and Lockets by Lark Books, juried by Mike Holmes and Elizabeth Shypertt, owners of Velvet da Vinci Gallery, shows the huge range of jewelry encompassed by this simple idea.

The most successful pendant presents a single idea on the wearer´s chest. The pendant as a diminutive personal sculpture is a theme that runs throughout The Pendant Show. Beyond their sculptural effect, pendants and lockets are some of the most personally significant objects humans can wear. Whether it is Victorian mourning jewelry made from the hair of the dead or a grandmother´s family photos in a gold heart around her neck, pendants and lockets can be a constant connection to loved ones here or hereafter. Like ancient funerary objects in an anthropology museum, the forms are both beautiful and sad. Although they no longer serve their original intention, you feel their enormous power, one that transcends time, location, and culture.

It could memorialize a lost relative or love-we don´t know. What is clear is that this jewelry is important to its wearer. The high school girl who puts her boyfriend´s class ring on a chain around her
neck knows this feeling well. Worn as a pendant, the ring becomes a public display of affection and a way of saying ''I´m taken.''

Pendants have evolved into powerful political icons as well. The peace symbol medallion of the 1960s and 1970s was a very successful, nonverbal way of taking a stand on the Vietnam War while showing allegiance to the era´s youth movement. At one time, a map of Iraq might have been just another irregular shape, but in her: It´s not black and white, Belinda Hager splattered it with blood red paint, and we understand its message. Not long ago, few people would have recognized Iraq by its outline, but it has become a powerful, politically loaded form.

The Pendant Show is a testament to the vitality and diversity of contemporary jewelry. Whether manifestations of joy, courage, whimsy, outrage, longing, or loss, these pendants delight and inspire you.

The show features the work of more than 125 jewelry artists from 25 countries.
