Three exhibitions

Middlesbrough Institute of Modern Art - Mima, Middlesbrough

Anders Ruhwald' sculptures seem to float above the gallery floor and lean gently on walls and each other for support. Katy Moran is one of the most talked about painters of her generation; her highly expressive canvasses offer a form of abstraction that is firmly rooted in day to day observations of our modern world. Hans Coper and Lucie Rie exerted a profound influence on the development of studio ceramics in Britain. Up Close is an opportunity to learn more about the exhibiting artists in a relaxed environment with complimentary activities.

Anders Ruhwald: You in between

Danish artist Anders Ruhwald is among the most noted of a new generation of ceramic artists, and his work has been highly acclaimed in exhibitions around the world. His sculptures seem to float above the gallery floor and lean gently on walls and each other for support. There is a strange sense of functionality to his work and his sculptural domestic objects and furniture, are often mutated beyond recognition. Imprints of household objects within clay, cement a sense of a familiar subject which is just beyond our reach.
This is his most significant exhibition to date.

Katy Moran: Paintings

Katy Moran is rapidly becoming one of the most talked about painters of her generation. Her technically audacious, highly expressive canvasses offer a form of abstraction that is firmly rooted in day to day observations of our modern world. For her first solo exhibition in a public gallery in the UK mima will bring together the best and most important paintings from her career together with a number of new works.

Lucie Rie & Hans Coper: Art alive is always modern

Together Hans Coper and Lucie Rie exerted a profound influence on the development of studio ceramics in Britain. They presented a fundamental challenge to the dominant ideas of Bernard Leach, based on a Far Eastern aesthetic, by introducing ideas of European Modernism into their practice. This exhibition presents major works by Rie and Coper drawn from mima's collection. It launches the long-term loan of the prestigious Abercairn Collection to mima which features some of the most significant works by these artists in private hands, and features major works from the Crafts Council's collection, the national collection of contemporary craft.

Acquisitions supported by the V&A Purchase Grant Fund.
