comunicato stampa

Miguel Ángel Pascual (Madrid, 1974) presents his first solo exhibition in Espai 2NOU2. The show consists of a painting installation specifically conceived for the gallery space, complemented by a simultaneous show at the Kutxa in Barcelona.

Taking the concept of non-place of French anthropologist Marc Augè as starting point, in his installation titled Ich verstehe nur Bahnhof (“I don’t understand anything”) Miguel Ángel Pascual reflects on the intertwine of spaces in painting. He creates simulations of large, impersonal spaces –here, railway stations in Berlin- in order to propose a reflection on representation in art. Within the exhibition room, the painterly railway setting functions at the same time as a container of other spaces or realities. The pictures and photographs incorporated on the intervened wall surface suggest an interplay of gazes between the various work immanent figures as well as with the spectator, which refers to concepts as seduction, appropriation or voyeurism.

Paraphrasing Jorge Luis Borges, Pascual considers himself rather as a collector of images than as a painter. Like a collector, he searches for, seeks out and reuses images of different sources which he later applies to interact on the pictorial space. Books, Internet, television, archive photographs and also the art history function as its iconographic origins. Consequently, a traditional landscape painting can be confronted with historical photographs of dictators or intimate snapshots released on the web. This accumulation should not be interpreted as a chaotic and fragmented juxtaposition of pictures but rather as a mis-en-scene in which space and figure propose a dialogue to comment on erotic themes, death, the fictitious or on art in general.

The oeuvre of Miguel Ángel Pascual has taken part in group exhibitions institutions such as the Reina Sofía Museum in Madrid, Centre d’Art Santa Mònica in Barcelona or the Tecla Sala in L’Hospitalet. His works are included in private collections as well as public collections such as the CAAM (Centro Atlántico de Arte Moderno of Las Palmas), the TEA (Centro de Fotografía, Tenerife) or the Testimoni of the Caixa and Caixa Sabadell collections, among others. The artist lives and works in Barcelona and Berlin.

In collaboration with Kutxa of Barcelona, in which head office will be shown a site specific installation.
