Works on Paper
In a show not to be missed Hirst’s spots twinkle in the Alpine snow! Verbier, known to be the
sportiest resort in the region is now becoming the cultural center for Contemporary Art.
The gallery which is known for being Europe’s leading Warhol and Pop Art specialist is now
showing Damien Hirst who is the most prominent member of the group known as ‘Young
British Artists’ or YBAs.
Hirst dominated the art scene in Britain during the 1990s and is internationally known for his
animals (often bifurcated) in formaldehyde filled vitrines. These arresting images have made
him the symbol of Britart and the world’s second most expensive living artist after Jeff Koons.
Recently, Hirst’s September sale at Sotheby’s in London, entitled Beautiful Inside My Head
Forever, grossed £111 million broke every rule in the book. Hirst subverted his dealers and
went straight to the auction room putting on an exhibition rivaling any museum retrospective.
The sale coincided with the collapse of two international banking giants, signaling the
beginning of the credit crunch, but the sale was unaffected by the events and cemented the
power and influence of the Hirst brand.
It is not a surprising that Hirst has been chosen by Coskun Verbier. The gallery, established
in London by Gül Coskun in 1996, has been Europe’s leading Warhol and Pop Art dealer for
over a decade. The influence of Warhol and the Pop movement in Hirst’s work is undeniable.
Warhol was one of the first artists to brand himself with his silkscreened images and Factory
happenings and now Hirst is the artworld’s most recognizable brand.
Where Warhol had diamond dust, Hirst has a human skull encrusted in diamonds; Warhol
had the Factory, and Hirst has Science Ltd., his umbrella corporation that oversees his vast
studios and team of 120 employees.
Both Warhol and Hirst deal with similar themes and imagery. They both explore death,
immortality, reproduction of images and the effects of money and wealth on art.
On view in the gallery will be a selection of spot aquatints (including Tetrahydrocannabinol
and Cephalothin), a selection of works from his portfolio of butterflies (The Souls on Jacob’s
Ladder Take Their Flight), and a Spin Painting on paper inscribed by the artist.
